Recap / Dragons: Riders of Berk S3 E8 "Crushing It"

Go To

Dragon's Edge is in trouble as a new dragon, deemed a Rumblehorn, tears the place apart, but it's so fast and strong that the riders can't even see it let alone stop it. Then to add further trouble, Gobber shows up with bad news from Berk.

Tropes:

  • Bear Hug: Stoick gives Hiccup one when the latter returns to Berk.
  • Bullying a Dragon: Stoick criticizes Gothi's plowing. Note that Gothi is the Village Elder and healer, and she has a mean whack when people like Gobber misinterpret her drawings. Fortunately for Stoick, Hiccup arrives to receive the whack.
  • Call-Back: Stoick after about ten episodes (3 years actually) admits that he misses Thornado.
  • Call-Forward: Stoick tames the dragon that he will have in How to Train Your Dragon 2.
  • Chekhov's Gun: The wall that Gobber helped build on Dragon's Edge blocks most of the tidal wave.
  • Commonality Connection: Stoick catches on that the Rumblehorn isn't being aggressive when it's gentle towards an ill Gobber and has a protective instinct the way Stoick does for his people. They bond almost immediately as dragon and rider.
  • Defiant to the End: Stoick is more than willing to fight the Rumblehorn as he falls from the sky. Luckily, Hiccup and Toothless were able to catch him before he could hit the ground.
Stoick: Oh, you want a piece of me on the way down, do you?! Come and get some!
  • Empty Nest: Stoick is suffering from this syndrome, as he lightens up when Hiccup reappears on Berk.
  • Fluffy the Terrible: The mace named Daisy.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: When Skullcrusher roars at a concussed Gobber, Gobber starts stroking its face and declaring that it's his long-lost pet yak. Look carefully at Skullcrusher's face to see him give a very confused Aside Glance.
  • Good All Along: Turns out the Rumblehorn was trying to warn everyone off the island because a huge tidal wave was about to crash into it.
  • I Call It "Vera": At least one mace is named "Daisy." It's implied that others have names as well, considering that Stoick ordered them organized by name.
  • Non Sequitur, *Thud*: Gobber gives one after several wall supports fall on top of him.
  • Obsessively Organized: Stoick becomes like this about how Sven should rearrange the weapons and keeps changing his mind every day.
  • Poor Communication Kills: Because the Rumblehorn is a dragon and can't talk, it can't warn the riders about the tsunami. Instead, it resorts to Shoo the Dog.
  • Scarily Competent Tracker: The Rumblehorn can easily track the riders.
