Recap / Don't Hug Me I'm Scared: Death

Go To

Duck "dies" and his funeral is held, leaving the remaining two to cope with his apparent death. Yellow Guy struggles to deal with Duck Guy's absence while Red Guy befriends a new blob creature to act as a replacement friend. Buried underground, presumably forever, Duck Guy adjusts to being dead.

Tropes:

  • Accidental Misnaming: Due to Duck using it to christen his headstone, every one of the mourners calls him "David".
  • Ambiguous Clone Ending: Did Duck kill Stain Edwards? Or did Stain Edwards, now fully in character as Duck Guy's replacement, kill him?
  • And I Must Scream:
    • Possibly the most benign and humorous example ever seen. "Death" in this world is being buried alive presumably for all eternity. But then again there is an emergency button that can be used to alert the talking coffin of any urgencies, a lamp-like light source so you won't be in the dark, and you can easily escape if someone breaks the coffin open. Duck Guy treats the scenario as if he is on vacation and is not the least bit scared of the situation.
    • Zig-Zagged for the Coffin, because it's implied by both the Coffin and the Yellow Guy that Duck Guy being conscious whilst dead isn't actually how it's meant to be, and the conscious Duck Guy being inside him becomes a living nightmare. But he does at least get freed from the situation when the Yellow Guy digs up the grave. Too bad he lost his face in the process...
  • Art Shift: During Stain's song, just like him, everything becomes claymation.
  • Body Horror: As part of the process of being dead, maggots start nibbling at Duck's leg at one point, which he takes in stride.
  • Bread, Eggs, Breaded Eggs:
Tissue Box: You should really eat something at a time like this. Have a sandwich?
    Yellow Guy: Sandwiches.
Red Guy: We don't want a sandwich.
Tissue Box: You're very brave. How about a tissue?
    Red Guy: No.
Tissue Box: How about a sandwich wrapped in a tissue?
    Yellow Guy: Sandwiches.
  • Break Them by Talking: Duck is dead and that’s the end of it. Right? Wrong. This episode stands out as the first time a Teacher has lost control of the situation, as Duck misuses the emergency button, relieves himself (due to drinking a milkshake during the funeral) and plays loud music whilst talking about himself. Coffin's last words are “I CAN'T DO THIS ANYMORE!!” before he's inadvertently broken up by Yellow Guy.
  • The Bus Came Back: The Lamp from "Dreams" makes a return, but is more chill than the Sadistic Straw Hypocrite we saw in the web series, opting to talk with Yellow Guy about the concept of death.
  • Continuity Nod: Once again, Yellow Guy is dissuaded from doing something creative by the Teacher of the episode, in this case, the coffin stopping him from playing a majestic trumpet eulogy.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: The opening makes it sound less like Duck Guy died and more like he got nominated for an award, complete with him and Red Guy squabbling over who "deserves" it more.
  • The Dog Bites Back: A mild, inadvertent example, but Yellow Guy killing Coffin by smashing him up is this after Coffin stopped his trumpet playing.
  • Follow the Bouncing Ball: Appears during the "We Gotta Get Things Ready for the Big Day" song. The ball is Duck's head, but changes to a skull on the word "day" and the last "for".
  • Foreshadowing:
  • Hidden Depths: Yellow Guy is really good at playing the trumpet. Unfortunately the Coffin doesn't like it. One wonders if it's his inner Fully-Charged self coming out for a moment.
  • Inherently Funny Words: The pink blob seems to think the word stain is one of these.
  • Lighter and Softer: Ironic, in the sense that the concept of death is ripe for horror. Other than the Coffin's introduction (which is then played as a joke) or Duck killing his double at the end (which is played as a Black Comedy Burst), this is the only episode of the season that does not shift to genuine horror at any point.
  • Major Injury Underreaction: When Yellow Guy cuts off one of his fingers with a pair of scissors, he just says "Ow," and that's it.
  • Mood Whiplash: The ending. Just the ending. We go from the group singing their usual intro with an extra member, and then we see a duck decapitating another duck with the same shovel that was used to free him from the grave.
  • Opening Shout-Out: After the blob becomes alive, Red Guy then declares they are now one of the three main guys. The scene immediately then transitions to the opening tune, albeit with the pink blob replacing Duck much to Yellow Guy's chagrin.
    • It happens yet again when Duck meets Stain Edwards disguised as himself and the two declare that are now four main guys. The shot then cuts again to the opening title yet again, only this not only Duck is back, but there is now a second one as well. It doesn't last though...
  • Shout-Out: The coffin emerges from the floor, constructing itself in gruesome detail, in the same manner, and poses as Frank's resurrection in Hellraiser.
  • Shovel Strike:
    • An unintentional one happens when Yellow Guy accidentally splits Coffin's head open when trying to dig out the buried Duck Guy.
    • A more straightforward example pops up when one of the Duck Guys decapitates the other with a shovel.
  • Status Quo Is God: When Duck Guy realizes that Stain Edwards has taken his place, he (at first) cheerfully decides that there will now be four of them. They don't even get through the opening song before deciding that four doesn't work. Although for a double whammy, we are left wondering which Duck Guy decided that.
Duck: Actually, no. Four doesn't work. There's three of us.
  • Surprisingly Sudden Death: As stated above, the first Duck killing the second definitely comes out of nowhere, and ends the episode on a shocking note.
  • Toilet Humor: This little Squick moment from Coffin and Duck.
    Coffin: ...what's that smell?
Duck: Oh, yes. Turns out I did need the toilet, actually. Quite a lot. Maybe that's what the tally was for. Here I go again!
  • Visual Pun: Coffin has a meltdown just as Yellow Guy smashes him up and retrieves Duck: he literally fell to pieces.

"Four doesn't work."

Duck returns from being dead, only to discover that Red Guy has made an exact copy of Duck. One of them kills the other, but which one is real?

How well does it match the trope?
