Recap / Dogs In Space S 1 E 6 Speak

Go To

The Pluto visits an intergalactic space station, possessing a valuable seed vault, that may hold the key to instantly restore Earth. When they are unable to convince the Shrubdub workers to provide a seed for them, Ed helps with Plan B: to steal one from the vault.

Speak contains examples of:

  • All for Nothing: The heist for the seed ends in disaster when Garbage discovers the one they stole is growing too fast due to being exposed to heat (Ed warned prior to the heist that they needed to stay in a cyrogetic container)). Though he wants to salvage it, he is convinced to save his crew instead.
  • Brutal Honesty: Kira is unable to lie about how much damage humans have put on Earth and to themselves.
Kira: You don't need to wipe humans out. They're wiping themselves out all on their own.
  • Cursed with Awesome: Kira previously had no interest in changing her DNA if it meant appeasing to the humans. However, she discovers that having thumbs is actually extremely useful (like for opening soda and using chopsticks)
  • Death Trap: The final defense mechanism protecting the seeds uses a two-digit combination. If the wrong combination is inputted, a portal to a dangerous planet will open depending on the combination used.
  • Downer Ending: The seed heist comes up short. Kira's friendship with Garbage is put into question when she suspects he is willing to risk his crew and other dogs for the sake of humans and, specifically, his owner Chelsea. When Garbage vows he is not planning to do that, Councilor Happy overhears and believes they are willing to betray the mission for themselves. Meanwhile, the Shrubdubs assess the damage to the station and seed vault and already suspect that the Earth dogs are behind it.
  • Everyone Has Standards:
    • The Shrubdubs are willing to offer world-restoring seeds to planets with great need, but refuse to help species who harm their own planet.
    • Nomi doesn't mind firing at living creatures, but she prefers firing at robot drones because she doesn't have to feel bad about it.
  • Freudian Excuse: Kira's Brutal Honesty against humans stems from the thought of her own human abandoning her. Garbage's desperation to save the humans, by any means necessary, stems from wanting to make Chelsea, his owner, proud.
  • The Heist: Like other places, Ed has spent time surveying the Shrubdub station to make blueprints for a future heist. After hearing Garbage suggest taking the seed, he comes up with a plan to accomplish this. Ed suggests that all six dogs are needed for the heist to work, specifically because it increases Chonies' chances of survival.
  • Humans Are Bastards: The Shrubdub receptionist learns that humans had brought harm to their own planet and caused several species' extinction. They are willing to restore Earth with one of their seeds... as soon as humanity is gone. They also have the means to Leave No Survivors, if need be, by manipulating a chosen planet remotely.
  • Lampshade Hanging: The crew briefly discuss how convoluted the aforementioned final trap is.
  • The Reveal: Kira reveals to Garbage that she belonged to a PRATS scientist like Chelsea.
  • The Unintelligible: The station travels to a nearby nebula to recharge daily, but renders all language incomprehensible for ten minutes, preventing the Shrubdubs from calling each other if the dogs are discovered. While this also affects the dogs, they will have to trust their body language and other means to get through together.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Kira calls Garbage out for risking his entire team just to please Chelsea.
