Recap / Disenchantment S 5 E 1 Heads Or Tails

Go To

Dagmar and Satan take over Dreamland and plan to use bad Bean to fulfill Dagmar's ultimate plan, forcing Elfo, Luci, Bunty and Mop Girl to hide Bad Bean's body from Dagmar. Meanwhile, Bean herself has to choose between staying with her new love Mora or go rescue her kingdom.

Tropes:

  • Bookcase Passage: Mop Girl and Elfo use one to beat Dagmar to Elfo's room, where Bad Bean's decapitated body is hidden.
  • Elopement: Mora tries to get Bean to forget about Dreamland and start a new life with her elsewhere. Bean is tempted, but ultimately decides she needs to help her kingdom first.
  • Evil Costume Switch: Dreamland's soldiers, now loyal to Dagmar, wear spiky black armor with a D on their chestplates... though in the case of Turbish and Mertz they're still incompetent buffoons.
  • Fake-Out Make-Out: When Dagmar arrives at Elfo's room and there's no time for Elfo and Mop Girl to hide Bad Bean's body, they quickly lie down on Elfo's bed and pretend to be in the middle of making love, thus obscuring Bad Bean's body from view and grossing out Dagmar enough that she quickly leaves.
  • Good Cop/Bad Cop: When interrogating the prisoners about Bad Bean's body, Dagmar resorts to using Perp Sweating and the threat of physical torture when interrogating Elfo, Mop Girl and Bunty, while Satan, who is tasked with interrogating Luci, instead tries to make Luci feel comfortable, giving him liquor and even revealing he's Luci's father, all in order to bait him into talking.
  • Internal Reveal: Jasper learns his mother is still alive and now also a prisoner in the freakshow.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: During Dagmar's speech to the citizens of Dreamland, the man who keeps getting shot by arrows for pointing out plot-holes points out how in Dreamland it tends to take over a year for any new development to happen, making it hard for anyone to remember what happened up to this point. This statement effectively lampshades the long waits between seasons due to Animation Lead Time.
  • Luke, I Am Your Father: Satan reveals Luci is his son.
  • Minion with an F in Evil: Turbish and Mertz are shown to have sided with Dagmar and are wearing her troops' armor, though their incompetence prevents them from posing much of a threat.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: The four conspirators - Luci, Elfo, Mop Girl and Bunty - all agree not to tell Dagmar the body is in Elfo's room. Unfortunately they make the mistake of discussing this in front of Merkimer, who squeals as soon as Dagmar threatens to brand him. Had they not done this, Merkimer wouldn't have been able to tell her anything.
  • Noodle Incident: Derek recalls how Oona set fire to her own ship, killing 40 members of her crew, when she tried to make him banana bread at his request. It has left her traumatized to the point you can't use the word "banana" in her presence anymore.
  • Not Quite Dead: At the very end of the episode, upon "hearing" Elfo's voice, Bad Bean's fist clenches in rage despite her having been decapitated.
  • Prophecy Twist: Dagmar's plan required Bean, but since there's two Beans now she can simply use Bad Bean for her plan and dispose of Good Bean.
  • Skinny Dipping: Elfo strips nude to dive into the ocean to search for Bean.
  • This Is Gonna Suck: Satan's face says it all when Luci announces he has a scrapbook of his entire life and intends to show it to him.
  • Too Kinky to Torture: Dagmar attempts to torture Elfo by whipping him, but since Elfo has a butt-slapping fetish it doesn't work.
  • Trip Trap: Vip & Vap do this to Dagmar to buy Elfo and Mop Girl more time to get to Elfo's room first.
  • We Can Rule Together: Dagmar tries to convince Mop Girl to join her cause. She rejects.
  • Whip of Dominance: Dagmar uses a whip when interrogating Elfo.
  • Wrong-Name Outburst: Satan refers to Dreamland as Steamland when he introduces himself as the new king. Later, when Elfo is tortured by Dagmar, he calls her Kissy before correcting himself.
