Recap / Dinosaurs S 02 E 20 And The Winner Is

Go To

Earl and Fran take the Baby to the Chief Elder so that Baby can finally have a name, but as he's about to name the Baby, the Chief Elder starts to die, and the dinosaur who registers the name mistakenly thinks the Baby's intended name is "Aaah Aagh I'm Dying You Idiot", which Fran intends to change when a new Chief Elder is elected. B.P. Richfield runs for Chief Elder, and since he has to have somebody run against him and the people in charge of his campaign also control the other, Richfield gets Earl Sinclair to run against him as he's stupid enough to lose. The family is happy that Earl is running against Richfield, until they see him singing showtunes on television and realize that he was running to lose. Earl has a dream about how horrible the world will be with Richfield in charge, and tries harder to win. When Earl is nervous about what to do during a television interview, Roy suggests that Earl focus on patriotism, his kids, and puppies, which increases his popularity with voters. Earl has another dream where he is Chief Elder, where he can't handle the pressure and accidentally starts a war, and when he wakes up he realizes that he's not fit to be Chief Elder. During the final debate, Earl says that neither he or Richfield are qualified to be Chief Elder. When the results are announced, Richfield gets more votes than Earl, but the winner is write-in candidate Edward R. Hero, the news reporter who has been reporting on the campaigns. When Earl and Fran take Baby to get a new name, Baby says his catch phrase, "I'm the baby", and Hero decides he should be named Baby.

Includes examples of

  • Astonishingly Appropriate Interruption: At the start of the episode, when Howard Handupme reveals that Richfield is running for Chief Elder, Richfield calls his workers into his office trailer just as Howard is about to reveal what he said via an interview.
  • Big Red Button: In Earl's dream about being Chief Elder, he is shown a button that he should only push in an emergency. When he gets flustered and pushes the button by mistake, it cuts to Stock Footage of an atomic explosion.
Earl: Oh, no! And on my first day!
  • Big "WHAT?!": Edward R. Hero says "What?!" in shock when he realizes that Richfield picked Earl to lose the Chief Elder election.
  • Catapult Nightmare:
    • Earl wakes up in shock after he dreams about Richfield becoming Chief Elder.
    • In the second half of the episode, Earl has a dream that he became Chief Elder and accidentally pushed the Big Red Button. He says, "Oh, no! And on my first day!", and wakes up screaming in shock.
  • Comically Missing the Point: The Stegosaurus who registers the name that the Chief Elder decides on doesn't realize that he's dying and thinks Aaah Aagh I'm Dying You Idiot is the name the Elder selected. Howard Handupme also thinks Aaah Aagh I'm Dying You Idiot Sinclair was the intended name while reporting on his death.
  • Continuity Nod: When Earl is embarrassed by the fact that they've gone a year without giving the Baby a real name, Fran mentions various events of past episodes as their excuse for not giving him a name yet.
  • Darkhorse Victory: Neither Earl nor Richfield win the election. Instead the voters select reporter Edward R. Hero as a write-in candidate.
  • A Dog Named "Dog": The baby was only referred to as such because he hadn't been named yet. When the New Chief Elder names him, he decides that Baby Sinclair will do just fine.
  • Election Day Episode: When the previous Chief Elder dies, Richfield runs for the position, and hires Earl to run against him, since Earl is too stupid to win. After Earl exposes Richfield's plan, neither win, but Edward R. Hero does.
  • I'll Kill You!: Richfield says this to Earl at the Chief Elder election debate when Earl confesses that Richfield specifically chose him to lose.
  • Let Me at Him!: Richfield tries to murder Earl at the Chief Elder election debate after Earl reveals that he was picked by Richfield to lose the election, He had to be restrained by 3 dinosaurs while the debate was still broadcasting on national television. This and the above trope lead to Edward R. Hero referring to Richfield as "a monstrous, bloodthirsty psychopath" running against the "self-confessed braindead ignoramus" Earl.
  • No Celebrities Were Harmed: Edward R. Hero is a parody of Edward R. Murrow.
  • Oh, Crap!: Earl in his dream when he realizes that he inadvertently pushed the Big Red Button.
  • Overly Literal Transcription: The Chief Elder's scribe writes down whatever the Chief Elder says without thinking whether it's really a name or not, which is how the Baby gets named Aaah Aagh I'm Dying You Idiot Sinclair. Fran mentions having a cousin named Atchoo and knowing a kid in school named Burp Excuse Me Siegelman, a name that Aaah Aagh I'm Dying You Idiot finds hilariously pathetic.
  • Severed Head Sports: Discussed; on the night of the debate, after Earl reveals Richfield's evil plan to win the election to Edward R. Hero, an enraged Richfield tells Earl he's going to tear his head off and bowl with it. Richfield's employees have to hold him back to keep that from happening.
