The Hive on Luna have stirred up into a frenzy, fearing a massive invasion the forces of the Last City have mobilized to keep them in check. Eris Morn found something buried deep under the Hellmouth, something which is bringing forth nightmare spectres of the most dangerous enemies ever faced.

Shadowkeep contains examples of:

  • Big Badass Battle Sequence: The opening level is unique as it has you running in alongside other guardians, along with NPC's with rocket launchers helping you push the Hive back. You go across two patrol spaces before going into the tunnels and separate into a solo fight.
  • Hopeless Boss Fight: Your first encounter with Nightmares is one of Crota, once your bring him down to 1/4 health he suddenly regenerates all health and brings in Nightmares of Ghaul and the Fanatic. Eris has to teleport you out before you are overwhelmed.
  • Retool: The game mechanics were revamped extensively from how the game was previously. The presence of Champions change a lot of the gameplay loop, they are Boss in Mook's Clothing that at higher levels require special mods that impact your guns in order to defeat. There is also finishers, a Finishing Move you can perform on non-boss enemies once their health is low enough. Compared to how the game played at launch in conjunction with the season storyline and related artifact mods, this felt like a Destiny 2.5 that was quite different than what came before.
  • Wham Line: When you finally enter the Lunar Pyramid, you get two in rapid succession. The first is the name of your entry point: Admittance. Any ambiguity on what that means is removed by this line:
  • Wham Shot:
    • You round a corner going deeper underground only to see a black Pyramid as the cause of all the chaos. Two years of no follow up on The Stinger of the base campaign, and now we get this.
    • After going inside the Pyramid, besting its challenges, and touching an artifact, your guardian is transported to what appears to be the Black Garden. Standing behind them is the Darkness itself, taking the form of you.
