Calus extends an offering to the Vanguard to once again explore the Leviathan, an older section where Hive and Vex have taken shop. Calus looks to reward you with more loot, in exchange for helping him with a mistake involving a Hive artifact.
Penumbra contains examples of:
- Bling-Bling-BANG!: The weapons that come from the Menagerie are encrusted with gems, appropriately giving it an opulent look.
- Doppleganger Spin: The two encounters dealing with Ghalran involve three different images of him, and there is a sub-boss called Ghalran's Deception that is designed to make you think it is him.
- Evil Is Not a Toy: Ghalran is a Cabal bather given the Crown of Sorrow by Calus, turning him into a monstrous form that required Guardians to help undo. Calus seems more amused by the incident than anything else.
- Genre Savvy: Calus wanted to use the Crown of Sorrow for his own ends, but realized that it could very likely ruin him instead via Demonic Possession. So instead, he creates Ghalran to wear the Crown in his place. His fears are confirmed when Ghalran is instantly possessed and transformed into the Bearer of Sorrow, alongside having the Hive infest the Leviathan.
