Responding to the ancient evil found on the Moon, the Vex attempt to invade from the Black Garden in order to secure it for themselves. Recognizing the Vex have put themselves in a vulnerable position, Ikora commissions the construction of a Vex portal to take the fight back to the Black Garden, with the hope of destroying the Undying Mind across all realities it occupies.

Season of the Undying contains examples of:

  • A Day in the Limelight: The lorebook "Aspect" (obtained by killing Vex, which definitely happened en masse with the Vex Offensive and Garden of Salvation raid) sheds more light on several individuals who have interacted directly with the Vex network and the Black Garden. Specifically, it chronicles the continued exploits of the Ishtar Collective scientists first documented way back in the first game, Praedyth's observations of them, the distant past, and the outside world as a soul trapped in the Vault of Glass, and the Vex's understanding of what actually happened when Pujari saw the Garden so long ago.
  • Bonus Dungeon: Both the Raid Garden of Salvation and the Dungeon Pit of Heresy are not directly part of the main story, but open up more avenues of investigation and knowledge.
  • Simultaneous Arcs: Shadowkeep is about the Hive and the Nightmares on the moon, this season started up soon after and focused on the Vex in the Black Garden trying to invade the moon. Both had new story content revealed progressively side by side.
  • Story Arc: This is the first season that tried to expand the development of the world beyond the first two weeks, as in conjunction with the Shadowkeep story there was more development on construction of the Vex portal and several weeks before the season ended saw the actual fight against the Undying Mind.
