Recap / Derry Girls S1 E4

Go To

Erin is so excited that teenage Katya, a "child of Chernobyl", is coming to stay, but Katya is not exactly grateful to be in Derry; There's developments in Granda Joe's love life, which Mary and Sarah aren't happy about.

Tropes

  • Age-Gap Romance: Discussed and Parodied Trope. In an attempt to argue that Joe's perfectly reasonable new romance is inappropriate, Sarah suggests that Maeve is way too young for Joe. She's not.
Sarah: What age are you, Maeve? Like, 30?
    Maeve: I'm 62.
  • Better as Friends: After the frosty reception from Mary and Sarah, Maeve and Joe agree to keep their relationship platonic.
  • Comedic Work, Serious Scene: The episode ends with Joe solemnly addressing a photo of his late wife and telling her she was perfect. It's played very earnest and sweet.
  • Double Standard Rape: Female on Male: Discussed Trope when Katya spontaneously starts kissing James. The girls agree they should probably put a stop to it, but then don't and continue to stand there gawking at them.
    Erin: Is he enjoying it?
    Michelle: It's hard to tell.
Clare: Well, if he's not enjoying it, isn't that sort of sexual harassment-y?
Erin: Yeah, we should put a stop to it.
[no one moves to do anything]
  • Ethereal Choir: When Clive — a Protestant stranded in the very Catholic part of Derry — sees Clare's Union Jack shirt, there's a sound effect of angels singing to indicate he thinks she's his salvation.
  • Fauxreigner: It is revealed that Artem is "a wee Prod from Belfast" who is terrified of being stuck in predominantly Catholic Derry, and fakes being Ukrainian to walk away safely.
  • Foreign Exchange Student: A group of Ukrainian students have been sent to Derry to get them out of Chernobyl.
  • Foreign Fanservice:
    • Katya thinks James being English makes him kind of sexy, in contrast with all the Irish girls who think him being English is unattractive.
    • Michelle thinks Artem being a Sensual Slav is attractive, and is less interested when he turns out to be a Protestant from East Belfast.
  • Instantly Proven Wrong:
David Donnelly: My band, we don't really do covers, do you know what I mean? In this game, you need a wee bit of integrity.
Jenny Joyce: Now, whatever you do, don't forget the Grease megamix.
  • Mistaken for Prostitute: Erin suspects Katya of being a prostitute:
Erin: First, she comes on to James here... Secondly, she owns condoms... And thirdly, all night, wee Ukrainian fellows have been coming up and giving her money they "owe her". How the hell do you explain that?
Katya: I organise — how you say it? — whip round. We like to buy Jenny present to thank her for nice party.
  • Nerds Are Virgins: The girls find the idea of their bookworm friend Clare having sex hard to imagine. Not just that she hasn't yet — none of them have — but doing so ever.
Clare: I mean, maybe it's just [James's] time. I mean, we're all gonna have sex at some point.
    Michelle: You probably won't, Clare.
Erin: Aye, I can't see that, either, to be honest, Clare.
  • Parent with New Paramour: Joe has started getting friendly with a very nice lady he meet at church. Ma Mary and Aunt Sarah are completely outraged and believe their father is disrespecting their mother's memory — never mind the fact that their mother's been dead for ten years.
  • Pet the Dog: Despite being let down that he's not a Russian she can bone, Michelle stays with a panicking (and possibly wasted) Clive and sees about arranging him a ride home.
  • Ruritania: Discussed and Parodied Trope. Erin clearly imagines Katya's home in Ukraine to look like this. Katya makes it clear it's not.
  • Sensual Slavs: Ukrainian Katya, and Russian Artem. Subverted with the latter, who seems much less sexy to Michelle when it emerges that he actually isn't Russian at all—he's a Protestant from Belfast who accidentally got on a wrong bus.
  • Technical Virgin
Michelle: Have you seen the one Jenny Joyce got, the fella? Massive, massive ride. I've been thinking, it might be time for me to lose the rest of my virginity, and he's definitely a contender.
  • Too Much Information: Parodied Trope in regards to Joe's new love interest he met at church.
Joe: We met at the Stations of the Cross.
    Erin: [suspiciously] Which station?
Joe: Jesus falls for the second time.
Sarah: I could do without the details, Da.
  • Translation by Volume: How Michelle initially communicates with Katya.
Michelle: YOU. HELP ME. YOU PUT IN GOOD WORD WITH YOUR COSSACK FRIEND. So we can [makes suggestive hand gestures]
