Go To

The second episode of the first season of Dennis the Menace (1986).

A Visitor From Outer Space

Randar, an alien from another planet lands in Dennis' room in a quest for peace and quiet, but Dennis wants to show him around. A mad romp ensues with Dennis taking Randar to Mr. Wilson's house. When Wilson calls the police, he is thought to be a quack and carted away.

Train that Boy

Dennis and his family go on a trip on a train. However, Dennis forgets his suitcase. Mr. Wilson, trying his best to make sure Dennis leaves, runs onto the train to give him the suitcase, but he cannot get back off and is now stuck with Dennis on the train. While there, Dennis sees a man with a trenchcoat and a briefcase and figures him to be a spy. With Mr. Wilson unwillingly helping out, Dennis proves the man to be a spy.

Genie Madness

Dennis and Margaret both find a bottle from which a genie emerges. They argue over who gets the wishes, but agree on each of them taking one wish, and sharing the last wish. Margaret uses her wish to make her doll come to life, which gets her into jeopardy, and Dennis uses up his own wish to save her.

"A Visitor From Outer Space" provides examples of:

  • Cassandra Truth: When Mr. Wilson sees Dennis and Randar floating in midair, he calls the police to inform them of what he saw. When the police arrive at his house, they don't believe his story and take him to jail.
  • Kids Hate Vegetables: When Dennis shows Randar the food in his refrigerator, he finds vegetables in there, which he hates. When Randar asks him what vegetables are, Dennis tells him they're something Earth moms use to punish Earth kids.
  • Say My Name: This episode ends with Mr. Wilson yelling "Dennis!" as he is taken to jail.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Randar retreats back to his home planet when he finds out just how hyperactive Dennis is.
  • Shrink Ray: When Randar first comes to Dennis' house, Dennis tries to run away from him. Randar then zaps Dennis, shrinking him. Randar unshrinks Dennis after Ruff buries him.
  • Soda Can Shakeup: When Dennis gives a can of root beer to Randar, Randar shakes it up, causing it to spray him in the face.
  • Trash Landing: A variant; after a shrunken Dennis rides on Ruff, he gets launched into the air and lands in Ruff's dog food bowl, wherein he complains about the taste of Ruff's dog food.

"Train That Boy" provides examples of:

  • Accidental Hero: A spy on a train is planning to blow up a power plant. Dennis, who is also on the train, sees him, outright assumes he's a spy, and attempts to stop him. After Mr. Wilson convinces Dennis that he's not a spy, Dennis deicides to apologize to him and sees that he left his briefcase behind, unaware that the detonators are inside. When Dennis gives the spy his briefcase, the detonators blow up while the spy holds his briefcase and gets caught by the police.
  • Accidental Passenger: In this episode, Dennis goes on a train to visit his grandmother. When he accidentally leaves his suitcase behind, Mr. Wilson goes onboard the train to give it to him. Unfortunately, Dennis refuses to let him off, saying his mom told him never to step off of a moving vehicle, resulting in Mr. Wilson having to come with Dennis and his parents on the train, much to Mr. Wilson's chagrin. At the end of the episode, the roles are reversed; when Mr. Wilson goes on the train back home, Dennis leaves his suitcase on the train and goes back for it, resulting in Mr. Wilson having to spend the ride back with Dennis.
  • Asshole Victim: The spy has his plan to blow up the power plant foiled by Dennis, and things get worse for him when Dennis tries to return his briefcase to him, unaware that there's a bomb inside it, as he suffers a series of Amusing Injuries trying to get away from Dennis.
  • Boom in the Hand: After Dennis foils the spy's plan to blow up the power plant, he leaves his briefcase with the bomb in it behind, only for Dennis to return it to him. The bomb explodes when the spy catches it, which gets the attention of all the policemen who are onboard the brake coach.
  • Butt-Monkey: Mr. Wilson. He gets roped into riding the train Dennis is on when Dennis accidentally leaves his suitcase behind, and Dennis refuses to let him jump off, saying it's not safe. He gets a pie tossed into his face, gets launched out of his seat, literally gets a book thrown at him, and gets hit by a signal when he thinks Dennis has climbed on top of the train. At the end, it seems like he's finally going to get a moment's peace on his train ride home, but then Dennis accidentally leaves his suitcase on the train and goes back for it, meaning they're going back home together.
  • Here We Go Again!: Mr. Wilson gets roped into the train Dennis is on when Dennis accidentally leaves his suitcase behind, and when he tries to jump off, Dennis prevents him from doing so, saying it's not safe. At the end, when Mr. Wilson is on his way back home, Dennis accidentally leaves his suitcase on the train, he goes back for it, meaning now Mr. Wilson has to deal with being on the same train as him again.
  • Human Mail: When the spy tries to escape from Dennis, he gets launched into a mail truck, put in a mail bag, and hung on a mail hook, eventually ending up back on the train Dennis is on.
  • Iris Out: This episode ends with one on the train Dennis and Mr. Wilson are on as it takes them back home.
  • Manly Tears: At the end of the episode, Mr. Wilson cries these when Dennis goes back home with him.
  • Pie in the Face: This happens to Mr. Wilson when Dennis tries to toss the box the pie is in into the overhead compartment.
  • Put on a Prison Bus: The spy's last scene involves him being arrested by the policemen who were onboard the brake coach.
  • Rail-Car Separation: Near the end of the episode, the spy uncouples the brake coach from the train to get away from Dennis, but unfortunately for him, Dennis tosses the briefcase at him, and the bomb explodes when the spy catches it. It also turns out that the brake coach was full of policemen, who arrest the spy.
  • Tempting Fate: As Dennis tries to return the spy's briefcase, the spy jumps onto a train heading in the other direction, then says, "Finally! At least I'll never have to see that face again!" only to get launched into the air by a mail hook, land in a mail truck, get hung on another mail hook, and be put back on the train Dennis is on.
  • Train Job: The spy boards the same train that Dennis and Mr. Wilson are on with instructions from his superior to destroy a power plant. Thanks to Dennis, his plan is foiled.

"Genie Madness" provides examples of:

  • Baby Carriage: When Margaret wishes for Molly to come to life, she also wishes for a baby carriage to push her in. Molly puts Margaret in the baby carriage and pushes her in it, requiring Dennis to rescue her.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: After she and Dennis stumble upon a genie, Margaret wishes her doll Molly would come to life and have her personality, only for Molly to treat Margaret the way she treats her, only much worse.
  • Comically Missing the Point: When Ali-Bubu introduces himself to Dennis and Margaret, telling them he's a genie, Dennis says that "Jeannie" is a girl's name, and Margaret has to tell him that it's not that kind of genie.
  • Inevitable Waterfall: Margaret heads for one when Molly pushes her baby carriage into the river. Dennis wishes for his bike to turn into a flying horse to save her.
  • Living Toys: Margaret's wish brings Molly to life, but Molly soon starts treating Margaret the same way she treats her, but worse.
  • Shout-Out: When Ali-Bubu introduces himself to Dennis and Margaret, he says he's a genie. Dennis then says, "Aw, come on! Jeannie's a girl's name!"
