Tropes:

  • Bait-and-Switch:
    • The episode opens with a flashback to Norma's childhood, when she was waiting in line to meet one of the park's mascots, only to get overwhelmed by all the people there. Then the mascot's head falls off. You'd expect her to reach her breaking point and scream, but instead she bursts into a relieved laughter.
    • The mascots persue people while saying "meat", implying that they want to eat them. Except it turns out everyone misheard it, they actually just want to meet them.
  • Fun with Homophones: The mascots didn't want to eat any meat, they wanted to meet people.
  • Have You Tried Not Being a Monster?: Barney gets annoyed at Pugsley, and says he wishes he was like how he was before he became sapient. Pugsley responds by telling him he's acting just like his grandmother.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: While Barney is initially in denial when Pugsley compares him to his grandmother, as he rambles he begins to make the connections and ultimately decides to try and find him to apologize.
  • Non-Malicious Monster: The mascots just want to meet people and do things like take pictures of sign autographs, they just happen to look and act creepy due to the costumes being dirty and worn out, them only repeating the word "meet", which sounds like "meat", and having a general Zombie Gait.
  • Poor Communication Kills: Barney ignores Pugsley's attempts to tell him why he was letting the mascots into the park, resulting in the latter leaving without explaining, and people in the park getting scared by the mascots even though they didn't mean any harm.
  • Power Incontinence: Pugsley gets so frustrated over Barney trying to hide the fact that he can talk now that he accidentally brings the old mascot costumes to life.
  • Queer Establishing Moment: Barney gets this twice. Firstly, there's his reaction when he sees Logan for the first time, quickly getting a crush on him. Then later, when Norma confronts him about why he's now living at the park, he explains that it's a place where he feels like he can just be himself since everyone else at home and school knows he's trans.
  • Scooby Stack: When peeking at the mascots being escorted onto the rail by Pugsley, bottom to top, we see Courtney, Norma, and Barney peeking around a corner at one of the rail lines.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Hurt by Barney wishing that he would go back to the way he used to be, Pugsley calmly tells Barney, "You know what Barney? You sound just like Grammy-Gram." Barney realizes that Pugsley is right while ranting about Pugsley's change later on.
