Recap / Dave The Barbarian Episode 9 King For A Day Or Two

Go To

Tired of the responsibilities of the throne, Candy goes on vacation and leaves Dave as the acting king. While Dave initially does a decent job, his fastidiousness soon turns the kingdom against him as Chuckles plans an invasion.

This episode contains examples of:

  • 0% Approval Rating: Dave eventually bungles his reign as king so bad that the kingdom begins celebrating when Chuckles takes over and bans musical theater.
  • Affably Evil: Chuckles sent a polite note informing Candy he would be invading soon... and also attached a fruitcake.
  • Ambiguous Gender: The throne thinks so of Chuckles, declaring that "his or her" rule is law.
  • Bread and Circuses: With his laws becoming increasingly unpopular, Dave forces the entire kingdom to attend his musical Oh, Pastry to distract them.
  • The Caligula: Discussed and subverted. Dave isn't an evil tyrant like the trope usually entails, and wants to be a good, benevolent ruler. But he doesn't take it well when his laws become unpopular and at one point threatens to go on a violent tour of revenge.
  • Comically Missing the Point: Dave is more concerned about Chuckles sending them a fruitcake than he is about the fact Chuckles is openly declaring his intent to invade.
  • Company Cross References: Candy and her friends visit a pub occupied by a gang of pirates who are a send-up to Pirates of the Caribbean.
  • Crazy-Prepared: Discussed when a guard point out that if they attend the musical, nobody will be defending the kingdom from invaders. The other guard notices that Dave ordered any invaders to attend the musical, and they agree that he thinks of everything.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Played for Laughs. Chuckles's second law bans the production of pickled pig's feet, and when Dave calls him out for such a silly law, Chuckles counters that it beats his law of shaving cats.
  • No Indoor Voice:
Guard: You know, you don't have to yell everything you say.
Town crier: (still yelling) Yell like what?
  • Serious Business: Chuckles threatening the throne with an ugly new upholstery is enough to get it to comply and declare him king.
  • Torches and Pitchforks: Candy returns with the people of Udrogoth in a big mob to depose Chuckles.
  • Tyrant Takes the Helm: Chuckles takes advantage of the kingdom attending Oh, Pastry! and sneaks into the throne to seize control. That said, Dave was becoming so hated that the citizens initially don't mind the take-over.
  • You Have GOT to Be Kidding Me!:
    Throne: State your name!
Chuckles: The Dark Lord Chuckles the Silly Piggy!
Throne: Are you kidding me with that?
