Recap / Darkwing Duck S 1 E 7 Duck Blind

Go To

Darkwing Duck falls afoul of Megavolt and comes out blind. Undaunted, DW tries to keep going using a few inventive gadgets, but Gosalyn, Honker and Launchpad almost get killed because of him. With Darkwing sunk in a black funk, Gosalyn and the gang plan to nab Megavolt themselves, but get caught by Megavolt instead. Can Darkwing save his friends before he gives up his crime fighting business forever?

This episode contains examples of the following tropes:

  • 10-Minute Retirement: Drake briefly quits being Darkwing Duck after a disastrously failed attempt to stop Megavolt nearly gets his allies injured. But when Launchpad, Gosalyn and Honker get captured by Megavolt, D.W. rushes in to save them and proves himself a Handicapped Badass.
  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: Darkwing is temporarily blinded, but sure that he can still do his job.
Darkwing: Would you quit fussing, I'm fine. Just...just find me a robbery, a...a jaywalker, *sounds pissed* a stockbroker. Any crook'll do.
  • Captivity Harmonica: Played with. While not in prison or isolated, Drake Mallard plays a harmonica while singing the "Has-Been Superhero Blues" in his living room.
  • Contrived Coincidence: The blindfold that Darkwing wears for most of the episode just happens to fall off when Darkwing regains his sight towards the end.
  • Dude, Not Funny!: Not used word for word but definitely felt by Gosalyn, Launchpad and Honker when Megavolt mocks Darkwing's blindness and alerting the gang at the same time that he is aware of it.
Megavolt: Three blind mice! Three blind mice! *cackles* Sorry, sort of an in-joke!
Gosalyn: *gasps* He knows you're blind!
  • Extremely Protective Child: Gosalyn temporarily dips into this in this episode, as she becomes set on keeping him from crimefighting until his sight comes back, afraid he'll get himself killed int he meantime. This gives her and Drake a bit of a role reversal, as she spends the episode coddling and trying to make him sit out the action the same way he usually does with her.
  • Gone Horribly Right: Gosalyn tries to get Darkwing to hold off on crimefighting until his eyesight recovers. Following the botched battle in the museum, however, Drake becomes so despondent that he enters a Heroic BSoD and gives up on pretty much everything else as well.
  • Handicapped Badass: Darkwing becomes this by the end, learning to rely on his own senses to battle and incapacitate Megavolt to save the others.
  • Heroic BSoD: Darkwing undergoes one of these after the botched battle in the museum, to the point where he quits being a superhero.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Between Darkwing and Megavolt.
Darkwing: You are not a well person!
Megavolt: What?! And you're normal? "I am the cold sore that stings your lip"? We're definitely talking demented!
  • Kitchen Sink Included: Darkwing notes that Megavolt used "everything but the kitchen sink" to attack him. Sure enough, Megavolt uses his powers to bring it to life and make an escape.
    Darkwing: ...I stand corrected.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Darkwing's stubborn pride refuses to let the cops handle Megavolt while he recovers from his blindness, making him resort to buying gizmos to keep crimefighting. But when those gizmos malfunction and the resulting fire nearly gets his friends killed, Darkwing becomes so despondent by what he caused that he temporarily quits being a superhero.
  • Remember the New Guy?: Megavolt is introduced in this episode, but he's treated as already being a regular foe of Darkwing Duck. His origin and real name wouldn't even revealed until much later.
  • Right for the Wrong Reasons: Honker mentions that blind people are capable of living productive lives, and mentions Johann Sebastian Bach as an example. However, Bach only went blind four months before his death.
  • Sherlock Scan: Darkwing, in his final confrontation with Megavolt, uses his other senses to their fullest extent. He uses his sense of touch to determine he's standing underneath a hot lamp - then accurately shatters it, leaving Megavolt in the dark. He then uses his hearing to counter Megavolt's electric sword by listening for the crackling noises and defending appropriately.
  • Temporary Blindness: Happens to Darkwing, but he manages to be Handicapped Badass.
