Tropes

  • Bad People Abuse Animals: Invoked and subverted. When the UnSub is awake he kills hunters, feeling that they deserve it.
  • Freudian Excuse: The UnSub's childhood was one of sexual abuse. In his sleep he revisits the places where he was abused and kills the people he finds there.
  • The Insomniac: The UnSub takes pills for insomnia, but as a result he sleepwalks and it is really hard to wake up.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: The UnSub's reaction when he discovers that he kills innocent people when he sleepwalks.
  • Shame If Something Happened: Alvez bluntly tells Shaw that if anything happens to Reid in prison, then he'll personally make sure Shaw suffers for it.
  • Shout-Out: The Shining. There is a nearly identical hide in bathroom/cut your way through the door scene.
  • Television Geography: This episode makes Burlington, Vermont sound like a small town in the middle of nowhere—it's even referred to as a town of only 40,000 people and uses an establishing shot of a few buildings surrounded by farmland. In reality, Burlington is Vermont's only city, despite its small population. It's the heart of the state's metro area, and is surrounded by several affluent bedroom communities. The three hunters would not be able to be killed and dumped somewhere remote within an hour's drive of Burlington, largely due to urban sprawl.
