Recap / Criminal Case Supernatural Investigations Case 09 Mad World

Go To

Gwen: Honestly, <Name>, if Dr. Stein wasn't dead already, I'd kill her myself!

The Hunters arrive at Blackmoor Asylum in El Paso, Texas, looking for former Officer Greg Schmidt and try to figure out the connection this ghost has to the murders they have been chasing. The player and Gwen do find him, but not before finding the asylum's owner Dr. Lucrezia Stein in a bathtub with her skull broken open.

Tropes:

  • Abusive Mom: Dr. Stein is this to Savannah, locking her up and drugging over her boyfriend. Also, she can be considered this for Adam, her creation.
  • Accidental Murder: Adam didn't want to kill Dr. Stein. He was trying to fix her lack of empathy, and she died because...well, her head was getting drilled and the brain is a very sensitive organ.
  • Artificial Human: Turns out, Adam is this, made from parts of Dr. Stein's victims. What's ironic is that he turns out to be much more moral than his absolute monster of a creator. Which is even lampshaded by Gwen herself with the revelation.
Gwen: But it's also ironic how such a cruel mind could've made something with more humanity than she could ever possess.
  • Asshole Victim: Taken to the extreme, as Dr. Lucrezia Stein manages to be the single most vile character in all of Criminal Case, so much so that even Gwen is relieved by her death.
  • Ax-Crazy: Well, how sane could you possibly be if you do the monstrous things Dr. Stein does?
  • The Cloud Cuckoolander Was Right: Greg turns out to be right about a ghost being to blame for the tarot murders, he even reveals who the ghost was!
  • Conjoined Twins: Obviously Charity and Mercy... But, turns out they were normal twins before Dr. Stein got her mitts on them and stitched them together, just to see if she could.
  • Driven to Suicide: Adam overdoses on pills both out of guilt for killing Dr. Stein and so he can be buried and the souls of those whose body parts went into making him can rest.
  • Frankenstein's Monster: Adam, he even shows you that he has bolts in his neck for crying out loud! Ironically, he's an angel compared to his creator.
  • Karmic Death: Dr. Stein, who can only be described as a mad doctor AND serial killer of her own patients was trepanned to death by one of her patients who turns out to be her creation, any questions about that?
  • Morally Ambiguous Doctorate: Sweet buttery Jesus, where to start with Dr. Stein?
    • She stole Charity and Mercy from their mother, then cut them up and stitched them together as Siamese twins just to see if she could.
    • She locked up her own daughter and drugged her out of her skull all because she didn't approve of her boyfriend.
    • To top it off, she killed multiple patients and cut them up to use their body parts and make her assistant, Adam.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Adam, who accidently killed his own creator in an attempt to make her not an absolute sociopath via trepanning suffers this, it's so bad he unfortunately takes is own life out of guilt and so those who she killed to make him can finally rest.
  • Psycho Psychologist: Let's see... Dr. Lucrezia Stein drugged her own daughter and kept her locked up in the asylum just because she didn't like her boyfriend, stitched two girls together just to see if she can... And let's not mention the fact she created Adam out of her victim's body parts, and she treated him and the other patients like crap, to boot. Yeah, it's a no brainer she can be considered this.
  • Playing with Syringes: Considering what she did, it's safe to say Dr. Stein would NEVER be allowed to practice medicine of any kind at all in real life.
  • The Reveal: Upon finding Greg's password for his files, the team finally learns that a young lady named Abigail Riley was found suffocated to death, which was believed to be an accident... And the first tarot murder was done by one of her six friends, and that continued.
  • Significant Anagram: When you move around the letters in Adam Enstrom's name, you get "monster", which is foreshadowing to what he truly is (physically, anyway).
  • Shout-Out:
  • Sympathetic Murderer: Adam realized Dr. Stein... Wasn't at all a good person, especially how she treated the patients and him, so he thought he could trepan the evil out of her brain, it didn't go as expected.
  • Who Murdered the Asshole: Considering the blight on humanity she was, it seems like everyone in the asylum had good reason to end Dr. Stein's life.
