Recap / Cold Case S 4 E 22 Cargo

Go To

When an unidentified woman is linked to an international human trafficking ring, the team reopens the 2005 case of longshoreman Mike Chulaski at the request of ADA Thomas, who hopes solving the case will help the FBI catch the ring's puppet master.

Related Tropes:

  • Accidental Pervert: Mike's body was found in a well-known seedy hotel and it was thought that he was beaten to death by a pimp.
  • Agony of the Feet: Boyka subjects the victims of her ring to this by burning their feet with cigarettes as punishment for any resistance or disobedience, to the point they're unable to walk. Mike also has his feet burned for trying to interfere with the organization in saving Lena. However, it's learned that his torture was done after he was dead, leading the detectives to look closer at who really killed him.
  • Being Good Sucks: Mike. He attempts to rescue Lena from the world of sex slavery, but in addition to being in over his head due to the complexity of the order, he's faced with the reality that he can't save everybody (at least, all at once).
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Kateryna portrays herself as a put-upon and helpless victim of human trafficking (which she is), but she is also a vicious, manipulative murderer who left Lena behind and tried to frame the traffickers for Mike's death.
  • Framing the Guilty Party: Katya framed Nachalnik for Mike's murder.
  • Hoist by Her Own Petard: Katya setting up Nachalnik for Mike's death leads the police back to her.
  • The Mafiya: Linda and her whole team are Russian mobsters.
  • More Deadly Than the Male: Both Linda and Kateryna prove themselves as this. While they do work with some pretty nasty men in their own right, one is a brutal, sociopathic head of an international ring that enslaves other humans for profit, while the other is a more sympathetic but still cold-hearted and selfish killer who murdered an innocent man and left her "friend" to suffer from the same misery she endured.
  • So Beautiful, It's a Curse: Katya's beauty is often remarked upon, which unfortunately made her a high commodity in the ring to the point she was forced to "service" ten men a day.
  • Tragic Hero: Mike Chulaski could not defeat an entire prostitution ring so he tried to save just one girl. He is instead killed by another prostitute desperate for help.
  • Tragic Villain: Kateryna (called Katya by Nachalnik) is a victim of the Eastern-European slavery ring and just wants to escape. She killed Mike out of desperation and used his money to build a new life in America.
  • Ungrateful Bitch: Kateryna. Mike promises to return to rescue her after rescuing Lena, but she feels that she's more worthy of freedom than Lena, so she kills him, ruining both of their lives instead of allowing all three of them to one day be free.
  • Woman Scorned: Katya tried to seduce Mike, but he could not buy her freedom. Her beauty failed the one time she was really counting on it. She snapped and killed him.
