James Hogan from "Sherry Darlin'" asks Lilly to investigate the murder of his uncle Joe Young after he met a man in prison who might have been involved.

Tropes:

  • Aborted Arc: Lilly opens herself up to James by writing him a letter. Nothing more of this relationship is known after this episode because this was James' last appearance.
  • All for Nothing: Monty chickens out of his friends' plan to start a taxi business and gets a job in his uncle's shoe shop, contributing to the dire straits that wreck all of their lives. Shortly after, his uncle's shop goes under too.
  • Driven to Suicide: Monty, who accidentally killed Joe decades ago, tries to commit suicide with the same knife he stabbed Joe with out of guilt. The detectives talk him out of it.
  • Fallen-on-Hard-Times Job: After the textile mill was closed down, Joe became a constable (forcing people out of their homes when they can't pay rent), Monty got a job with his uncle at a shoe store after backing out of trying to start a one-car taxi service, and Ham became a butcher (which did not pay enough so he stole a whole ATM machine). In the present day, Monty is a telephone linesman even though he is too old.
  • The Gambling Addict: Gambling is a central theme concerning the victim and the suspects.
  • Horrible Judge of Character: Ham says Joe made the huge mistake of totally believing supervisor Johnston's assurances he'd do all it took to keep the mill open. In reality, Johnston had already agreed to sell the place.
Ham: If Joe had one fault, it was always taking people at their word. It never occurred to him the boss might lie to him.
  • Karma Houdini: Bob Johnstone, who lied to his employees' faces about how their jobs were safe when, in reality, he had already sold them all down the river; when the trio break into his mansion to ransack it in retaliation, they discover that he had already skipped town and taken everything with him.
  • Murder by Mistake: After the failed heist, the trio ends up in an argument, where the enraged Monty charges at Butch with a knife but stabs Joe by accident.
  • Sequel Episode: To "Sherry Darlin'", as the episode's victim is James Hogan's uncle Joe.
  • Sore Loser: After Joe wins $100 at a poker game a work friend hosted, the friend accuses Joe of cheating and demands the money back. His wife then drags him along to confront Joe at his residence, but she is left visibly embarrassed after her husband admits he lied.
  • Taking the Bullet: Joe dies taking the knife meant for Butch.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: Butch repays Joe taking the knife for him by running off and pretending nothing happened, rather than attending to Joe's wounds. This came to bite him decades later after he is arrested for inaction.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: During their heated argument, Butch ends up taunting Monty, and the latter responds by pulling a knife. Joe talks Monty down, and when it looks like everything is going alright, Butch taunts Monty for being a chicken, and the latter charges at Butch with the knife, only to stab Joe.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: Ham's wife has made no contact with him since he left prison, making it unclear if she died, divorced him, or he simply has to wait until he finishes his period in the halfway house to see his family again.
