Tropes for the episode:

  • All for Nothing: Linda stole Sean from his loving family so she could finally be a mother, but she only got a couple years with him before she was murdered.
  • Asshole Victim: Linda is this to Sean's biological parents. When they find out the detectives are trying to solve her murder, they want the case to be dropped, wanting there to be no justice for the woman who stole their child.
  • Baby Be Mine: Linda decides to kidnap Sean due to the fact that her husband Vic is infertile, while a pregnancy from an affair ended in miscarriage.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Sean is still going to jail for at least two years. But he is also reunited with his real family, who will wait for him to finish his sentence and hopefully help him get his life together. Not to mention Linda's murderer has been brought to justice.
  • Dead Person Impersonation: Linda's alias, Rebecca Morgan, was taken from a college student who died four years before Sean was born.
  • "Friends" Rent Control: Linda had a pretty nice house for a cocktail waitress who needed discounts on baby things from an infatuated grocery store worker.
  • If I Can't Have You…: Kyle goes to Linda to blackmail her into resuming their sexual relationship, planning and perfectly willing to murder her should she refuse.
  • It's All About Me: Kyle only came by to Linda's place to either have her as a lover or as a murder victim. When he ended up making her the latter, he doesn't bother to take Bobby home to his real family or even comfort him.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Kyle neglecting to take Sean home would come back later to bite him when the now-grown kid remembers some crucial clues about him (having to do with his real name and catching a train).
  • Law of Inverse Fertility: Zig-zagged. Linda wanted to have a baby more than anything. She had no problem getting pregnant. It was carrying the baby to term that she struggled with.
  • The Lost Lenore: Ned, Vic, and Dr. Silver all possessed intense feelings for Linda/Rebecca while she was alive and still think back about her wistfully (whether in a mere lustful way or due to feeling they had the potential for true romance) years after she rejected all of them (and manipulated Vic into committing a felony).
  • Love Makes You Evil: Linda had no problems seducing Kyle in order to get pregnant. Kyle refused but was heavily tempted, but by the time he decided to go with Linda, she already kidnapped Sean and didn't need him anymore.
  • Maternally Challenged: Sally admits that Linda was a good kid, but she "didn't take to her" on the day her daughter was born. This attitude didn’t change when Linda reached adulthood, nor did she react strongly to the news of her murder.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: In the Ghost Reunion Ending, Linda sees Sean with the parents she stole him from, and it's written all over her face that she finally realizes that she ruined his chance to have a happy childhood with a loving family.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: Lilly tells Sean that he can "have it all" (money, home, wife, family) but he's going to need help. When he presses her for information on how she knows what he needs, she confesses that she was once like him:
Lilly: Because I wanted everything too! And I was too damn proud to ask for help for way too long...
  • Pay Evil unto Evil: Downplayed. Bobby's real parents wanted Detective Rush to drop the case on Linda's murderer, given she kidnapped their infant son. However, unbeknownst to them, the murderer is just as much at fault for not returning the son as a toddler when he had the opportunity.
  • Precocious Crush: Played with. Sean feigns developing a crush on Lilly just to butter her up, but she doesn't buy it.
