English Episode Title: The Bait — French Episode Title: Comment tromper XANA
Jérémie Plans to inject fake codes into everyone to slow the power increase of XANA, however XANA figures this out by spying on them, and sends a specter with Hypnotic Eyes to stop them.
This episode contains examples of:
- Adaptational Attractiveness:
- Sissi is a blonde here, which may be a Brick Joke of sorts to Odd suggesting to Sissi to dye it blonde at the end of Echoes.
- Mrs. Hertz no longer has grey hair, nor does she wear glasses it seems.
- Alpha Bitch: Sissi, as per usual, though she softens up as she's briefly hypnotized by the specter.
- All for Nothing: Odd's entire mission to Lyoko is rendered pointless by Ulrich giving XANA's specter his fake codes, and Jérémie outright calls off this method of attacking XANA's specters, as he admits it's too risky.
- Bait-and-Switch:
- Jérémie suggests making fakes codes and injecting them into the Lyoko Warriors' sequence to fool XANA, and so he doesn't get any more powerful than he already is.
- Ulrich pretending to be taken over by XANA when getting out of the tower after everything bugs up on Jérémie's end.
- Being Good Sucks: Odd, after he's forced to call off his meeting with Samantha to be on Lyoko. Samantha isn't happy about this, of course.
- Call-Back:
- Jérémie reminds the gang about the source codes XANA wants back, and Ulrich points out that it was hard to forget.
- While Odd chats with her, Samantha talks about changing schools and an argument with her father about being expelled too many times, likely alluding to her bad grades and her rebellious streak in the original.
- Continuity Nod:
- Jérémie and Ulrich tells Odd to play nice with Sissi, as she's their friend now, which references the end of Echoes where she becomes part of the friend group.
- The nickname "Einstein" returns, used by Ulrich and Odd as Jérémie's nickname
- Odd jokes to William that Ulrich might turn into "Dark Ulrich", which William doesn't find amusing.
- Samantha calls Odd a "Beet-Lover", which is what Odd said to Samantha in Countdown.
- Cannot Spit It Out: Yumi and Ulrich, as per usual. Ulrich stumbles over himself as to why he wanted to test Jérémie's dud codes.
- Defiant Stone Throw: To get the specter off her back, Yumi throws a board eraser to distract him and escape the classroom.
- Holding Hands: Yumi and Ulrich rightly suspect Jim when scouting the school grounds, and Yumi grabs his hands. He isn't, and just reminds them of sports practice for later. He notices the hand-holding, and bids them farewell for interrupting them. Yumi and Ulrich are left suitably embarrassed.
- Hypnotic Eyes: The new specter is capable of this.
- Running Gag: Sissi bumping into Odd, and claims that he's following her around.
- Skewed Priorities: Odd initially won't follow Sissi as he's meeting up with Samantha. After Jérémie seemingly berates him over the phone, he changes his tune.
- Side Effects Include...: Subverted, as Jérémie doesn't know what the dud codes will do when injected into them.
- Super-Persistent Predator: Yumi is being chased by a specter, who wants XANA's source codes back.
- You're Insane!: Jérémie tells Odd to attack, no matter what, and immediately asks what Odd is thinking, and he responds by saying that he's just following his orders.
