Recap / Chainsaw Man Season 1 Episode 9

Go To

After Himeno's death, Denji gets a second chance at fighting Samurai Sword, but is quickly defeated after trying to take a hostage. Thereafter, Makima turns out to have survived, and has her own means of assistance even while still in Kyoto.

The ending theme for this episode is "Deep down" by Aimer.

Tropes:

  • Adaptation Expansion:
    • Denji's fight with Samurai Sword is slightly extended, showing them clash for a while before the latter's gunmen join in.
    • An added scene shows the convicts Makima sacrifices as they're being lead to the temple.
    • The anime shows a strengthened connection between Makima and birds when she starts killing Katana Man's goons.
    • In the manga, Kobeni runs out of ammo as soon as she shoots Samurai Sword, she takes cover behind Denji's body, and Sawatari flees because her partner is bleeding out. Here, Kobeni's gun has enough ammo for a brief firefight with Sawatari, even as the latter is escaping in her car, including a scene of the latter having to pick a gun up off her henchman's corpse.
    • The manga didn't specify how Kobeni dispatched her assailant, it just showed Kobeni standing over her bleeding corpse on the ground. Here we're shown Kobeni avoided her gunfire and forced her to shoot herself in the head. While originally just implied in the manga, the anime also shows that Arai took the bullet that could have killed Kobeni.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: Kobeni proves herself to be an Action Girl despite her cowardice by easily maneuvering her way through Katana Man and Sawatari's attacks to save Denji.
  • Big Damn Heroes:
    • Makima dispatches all of Katana Man's lackeys in a blink of an eye all the way from Kyoto.
    • Kobeni saves Denji just as he's being dragged away into Sawatari's van, forcing the two to flee when it's clear that she's far more dangerous than she looks.
  • Diagonal Cut: Denji is seemingly killed this way by Katana Man, along with the lackey that he is holding.
  • Dramatic Irony: Kobeni says she's going to tell Himeno she's quitting when she sees her again... unaware that not only Himeno is dead, her body is nowhere to be found, so Kobeni can't possibly ever see her again.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: When Kobeni stopped shooting at Sawatari making her escape, the slide of pistol is pulled back, showing the gun was out of bullets.
  • Literal Disarming: After Samurai Sword's Devil power had run dry, he still has a handgun to use against Kobeni's knife. She dodges his bullets, slices off his forearm, snags the firearm it was holding, and shoots him with it—all in one motion.
  • Ludicrous Gibs: In this episode it is shown that Makima can sacrifice people in exchange for the power to crush someone else's body into a bloody pulp, even from a distance. Apparently she only needs to know the intended victim's name.
  • Mrs. Exposition: Tendo serves briefly as this during the convicts' sacrifices, as she explains to Kurose that lower ranked Devil Hunters are not allowed to know exactly what kinds of contracts Makima has with devils.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • Katana Man and Sawatari visibly look nervous when Kobeni shows up unharmed, which is then doubled when she is able to dodge through their attacks.
    • The train passengers also have this reaction after the assassins have seemingly killed Makima, fearing their for own lives. This is then followed up by the assailants' own reaction when they see Makima rise back up from the dead.
    • Kurose and Tendo are shocked at the aftermath of Makima's slaughter of Katana Man's henchmen sacrificing the convicts they found. They also get uneasy when they find out that Makima gained control of the entire special division and hope that she doesn't expect them to stay with her.
  • Out of Focus: The main trio has very little focus in this episode, since Denji and Aki are incredibly injured and Power escaped in the chaos of Katana Man's attack.
  • Taking the Bullet: Very subtle, but Arai used his last seconds of life to block with his head the shot that was intended for Kobeni.
  • Unexplained Recovery: So far it isn't explained how Makima seemingly survived getting shot in the head.
  • Use Their Own Weapon Against Them: Kobeni shoots both Samurai Sword and the old woman sent after her and Arai with their own pistols, the latter while she's still holding the gun.

Katana Man

Gigguk explains how Katana Man's appearance changes up how Chainsaw Man is viewed, changing it from what was basically Shonen It's Always Sunny into a Postmodern Shonen Devilman, complete with Makima making the otherwise black and white morality into a more grey and grey morality.

How well does it match the trope?
