Go To

  • Almost Dead Guy: Haruspex drinks a potion which brings her back to life after being killed by the Darkasher so she can deliver a final clue to Philo.
  • Angry Collar Grab: Piety does this for drama when telling her son that Sophie is his sister.
  • Armor-Piercing Question: Agreus is stumped when his servant asks him if he considered Imogen being properly shielded against the dangers of their relationship. It makes him try and Break Her Heart to Save Her later.
  • Beneath Notice: The Chancellor gets attacked by a Faun sectist who disguised himself as a servant to get close to him.
  • Blood-Stained Letter: The release letter for Vignette is covered in Absalom's blood after the attack.
  • Break Her Heart to Save Her: Agreus attempt to break up with Imogen in order to save her from public shaming. A rare example where this fails as Imogen looks through his charade with ease and encourages him to stay by her side.
  • Child of Forbidden Love:
    • Philo is the result of a forbidden love between Absalom Breakspear and Aisling.
    • Jonah is the secret child of Ritter Longerbane and Lady Piety.
  • Cold-Blooded Torture: Piety plans to torture Vignette for the location of Philo, implying she'll go so far as to cut out Vignette's liver while she's still alive.
  • Conveniently Placed Sharp Thing: Piety leaves Vignette behind in her Torture Cellar with her torture tools in close reach. Guess what happens next...
  • Conveniently Timed Attack from Behind: Vignette kills Piety by stabbing her in the back of the head in time before the villainess could command the Darkasher to tear Philo apart.
  • Convenient Misfire: By sheer luck, Philo escapes death when Chancellor Breakspear tries to execute him but his pistol jams up.
  • Enemy Mine: The assassination of Absalom by a terrorist group leads the opposing parties to unite against this external threat.
  • Evidence Dungeon: In the sewers, Phile finds a lab with leftovers of Piety's experiment to create the Darkasher.
  • Eye Awaken: When Philo makes a noise in the sewers, the Darkasher comes alive as the camera focuses on his eyes opening up.
  • Face Death with Dignity: Haruspex calmly awaits the Darkasher.
  • For Want Of A Nail: Lampshaded by Sophie Longerbane pointing out to Jonah how her forged blackmail letter managed to change the course of history.
  • He Knows Too Much: Haruspex gets killed by the Darkasher because she knew of Lady Piety's secret.
  • Impeded Messenger: Absalom is killed before he could dispatch his letter that would get Vignette released from jail.
  • Irony: Lampshaded by Agreus who notes that Imogen trying to sneak into his house using the servants' entrance mirrors the early scene of Agreus being asked to use the servants' entrance of her house.
  • I've Come Too Far: Said word for word by Piety during her and Philo's final confrontation as an explanation why she can't let him go.
  • Just Hit Him: While we have seen the Darkasher going berserk on his previous victims, during his fight with Philo he doesn't go for the immediate kill but throws him around the room.
  • Losing Your Head: Philo decapitates the Darkasher with a hatchet. This only serves to slow it down a little.
  • Loving Details: Agreus mentions the smell of Imogen's hair and the feel of her skin.
  • Luke, You Are My Father: After realizing it himself, Philo reveals himself to the Chancellor as his son.
  • New Era Speech: At the end, Jonah delivers a hate speech in Parliament outlining his plans to unite all forces to drive out the "common enemy". Sophie joins him with the following:
"A new day is dawning. A change is coming to this city. Together, we have crossed a Line in the Sand. And we can never go back."
  • Ominous Adversarial Amusement: Ezra starts laughing after getting knocked down by Agreus. We then learn that he plans to use this attack and the bloody nose he conceived to get Agreus thrown out of town.
  • Playing Possum: Vignette pretends she hanged herself in the holding cell to escape when the police open it. She then tries to flee but is caught.
  • Promotion, Not Punishment: Jonah tells Milworthy that he is no longer in need of a tutor. When the latter accepts his resignation and moves for the door, Jonah explains that he instead needs an Honest Advisor.
  • Remote Body: Lady Piety was controlling the Darkasher remotely.
  • The Reveal:
    • Philo is really the son of Absalom Breakspear.
    • Piety Breakspear is the serial killer but Sophie Longerbane is actually the one who started the whole ball rolling by faking Aisling's blackmail letter to the Chancellor about their half-blood son.
    • Jonah is really the son of Ritter Longerbane by blood, due to his mother's affair. Therefore, he is also Sophie's half-brother. She drops the bombshell after they had sex, to his shock.
  • Running on All Fours: The Darkasher changes from bipedal to quadripedal running when pursuing Philo in the sewers.
  • Sexy Discretion Shot: When entering Agreus' house, Ezra finds his and his sister's clothing all over the floor, indicating that they were having sex.
  • Sounding It Out: Jonah prompts his tutor Milworthy to read Aisling's supposed blackmail letter out loud.
  • Spiteful Spit: A cop spits after Vignette after they foil her escape attempt and throw her back into a jail cell.
  • Spotting the Thread: Jonah recognizing Sophia's handwriting in the blackmail letter supposedly written by Aisling.
  • Surprise Incest: Jonah is shocked to learn Sophie is his sister, as they share a father, after they've had sex. She already knew and didn't care, invoking her Pharaonic ancestry, since the Pharaohs often married their sisters. He comes around after this, and they stay together, with her even proposing they marry as well.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: Vignette's plan to break out of the holding cell with a surprise attack is foiled quickly as she is up against too many cops in her way.
  • Tactical Door Use: Phil pins the Darkasher beneath a sliding metal door in the sewer tunnel.
  • Thwarted Coup de GrĂ¢ce: Imogen comes in foil her brother's attempt at shooting Agreus.
  • Uncertain Doom: We don't know if Fleury is dead or alive after she was shot down while trying to flee the city.
  • Use Their Own Weapon Against Them: Lady Piety gets killed by Vignette with the same torture device she intended to use on Vignette a scene earlier.
  • Use Your Head: During his confrontation with Ezra, Agreus headbutts him, certainly a fitting way for a member of a half-goat species to conduct himself.
  • Vorpal Pillow: Piety kills her weakened husband with a pillow.
  • Why Can't I Hate You?: Philo says he wants to hate his father for abandoning his mother but he can't because it would make him a hypocrite since he himself abandoned Vignette.
