Recap / Carmen Sandiego S 4 E 01 The Beijing Bullion Caper

Go To

V.I.L.E. plots to kidnap a dignitary who manages China's largest gold reserve, setting the stage for a high-flying battle at a Beijing opera house.

Tropes:

  • Action Girl: Xifeng is willing to fight with Carmen, her Peking Opera training helping her to collect priceless vases before they drop to the ground and she gives Mime Bomb a beautiful flying kick before he can make an escape.
  • Answer Cut: After Carmen foils everything for him, again, Roundabout is dragged to the dungeons of the castle headquarters. As he is taken away, he screams demanding to know what became of Neal, as he failed too. It then cuts to Neal sipping a drink on a boat commenting on his slippery tactics to get out of further trouble...before the trawler's nets drop a load of fish on him.
  • Bowdlerize: The title of the opera performed isn't named in the show, but a good look at the credits reveals its name as Farewell, Beloved Concubine.
  • Brick Joke: Before the opera starts, Zack shouts, "Break a leg!" At the end, when Shadowsan falls and injures his leg, Zack bemoans at how he was Tempting Fate.
  • Call-Back: To the pilot episodes. Chase had detained Graham on the train he chased Carmen to and then lost his chance to question him. Chase recognizes Graham on the security camera where Chief was transmitting herself to talk with the young man.
  • Daddy's Girl: Xifeng is this to her father, and she's extremely protective and worried for his safety. Good thing too, considering what V.I.L.E planned to do with him.
  • Exact Words: Roundabout tries to use the fact he wasn't actually put in police custodynote  as justification to be spared from getting his mind being wiped. Maelstrom is having none of it.
  • Extremely Protective Child: Xifeng is quick to join Carmen in protecting her father from V.I.L.E.'s plans. Once it is done and her father is safe, she tackles Mime Bomb to the ground.
  • Injured Limb Episode: Shadowsan injures his leg in a fight with Lady Dokuso. The injury will last for the next several episodes.
  • Never Say "Die": Xifeng mentions that she and her father would perform in the Peking Opera in honor of her mother who...Carmen stops her before she finishes but you get the jist.
  • Properly Paranoid: Xifeng senses something wrong just before she sips on the (poisoned) tea and rushes out just in time to find Neal the Eel throwing vases at Carmen.
  • Redemption Quest: Inverted, as the job is for Roundabout and Neal to redeem their failures in season three.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: When things go south and Team Carmen not only saved Li from V.I.L.E. but stopped them from stealing any gold, Neal knows if he returns to V.I.L.E. he will have his mind wiped. So, he books it when no one is looking and is last seen on a fishing trawler.
  • Spot the Thread: Xifeng is quick to realize the man on stage is impersonating her father because the singing is too good.
  • Spanner in the Works:
    • Xifeng's sixth sense saves her from drinking a poisoned tea and she becomes crucial in stopping VILE. She also is the one who notices how Mime-Bomb is imitating her father because the recording he uses is too professional.
    • Gray looked to be a free man and away from ACME...had Chase not arrived and remembered that he saw him in the train from "Becoming Carmen Sandiego (Part 2)".
  • Strange Minds Think Alike: Both Xifeng and Gray think that Carmen's group/ACME are either part of Interpol or the CIA.
  • Tampering with Food and Drink: Roundabout's Plan A for the job is to have Lady Dokuso poison the tea Huang Li is about to drink.
  • Time for Plan B: After the poisoned tea plan is botched, Roundabout nervously switches to his second plan as Maelstrom is losing patience.
  • Voice Changeling: Subverted. VILE may had the perfect disguise but impersonating an voice is much trickier. Lip-Syncing might fool a crowd of strangers but when it comes to someone who had heard your hostage's voice a thousands times, such as their daughter, it won't be the case.
  • You Have Failed Me: At the start of the episode, Roundabout and Neal are facing being mind-wiped for their failures last season. After their further failure in this episode, Roundabout is locked away while Neal flees to avoid the same.
