Recap / Calvin And Hobbes The Series S 4 E 24 Our Solemn Hour Part 1

Go To

Calvin's room has been transported into another dimension by Holographic Retro, who, it turns out, is behind most of the problems of the season. Meanwhile, he's found an empty dimension, and though it took him a full year, managed to reconfigure it into the place he's sending Calvin and Hobbes. The dimension is a maze, and Retro's giving them an hour to figure it out before the walls close in on them.

Calvin asks the MTM for directions, but the MTM doesn't know the way either, especially as the tunnels shift. The team avoid a flood of lava when Hobbes discovers that the upper half of a wall could be punched through, and then run through the maze and find themselves in a giant room overlooking a Bottomless Pit. There's a slide around it, which the group take. When it's done, they find themselves in a cave, with a river of molten lava on one side.

They make it across the river, and a new room opens up, this one with platforms instead of a floor. There's a fork in the road ahead. Hobbes gives Calvin a kittyback ride as he jumps from platform to platform, with the one's he's left falling down. They discuss which path to take. Hobbes hears a computer running, and MTM scans for it and disables it. One of the entrances flickers away- it was merely a projection. Hobbes takes the other path, a long hallway.

At the end of the hallway, there's a stone slab jutting out from a wall. Hobbes immediately jumps on it. A new entrance appears, but it's at the end of a jump that Hobbes can't make. Instead, they ride the MTM across. Once they're on the other side, the slab they were on falls down. They run down the corridor at the other side, which leads to a lava lake with stepping stones across it. They cross, and find that the next corridor has half its floor missing- they're going to have to walk along a ledge. They do, and the ledge crumbles away behind them. They barely make it to the next room in time.

Next, there are two paths, one an actual pathway and one a ventilation shaft. Calvin decides to take the cover off the shaft and throw it down the corridor to see what's down there. What he finds is that the pathway is a dead end, so they have to take the ventilation shaft. They slide down the shaft, then into another shaft, and then out onto something soft and bouncy.

They end up in a child's bedroom, but not their bedroom. Then the doorknob begins to turn...

Tropes:

  • Arc Welding: Retro was the one who cut the power in Surge, recharged Electro in Part Three, planned the invasion and salvation of Annkor in The Invasion, and caused Calvin and Socrates to have a "Freaky Friday" Flip in Bodyswap (he had intended to wipe Calvin's memories, but Socrates got in the way).
  • Bottomless Pit: All over the place.
  • Casual Danger Dialogue: About the flood of lava coming from behind them, although it's immediately followed by them screaming and running.
    Calvin: Oo-kay, so what's Plan B?
MTM: We avoid the flood of lava that's coming down the tunnels towards us.
    Hobbes: We avoid the what?
Calvin: Hm. Here Comes the Flood.
    Hobbes: Indeed.
  • Convection, Schmonvection: At one point, Calvin is surrounded by lava, and he isn't even burned. Zig-Zagged later on, when the MTM's manipulator arms are used to make a bridge over a lava river. MTM complains that the arms are about to melt, but Calvin and Hobbes don't seem to feel the heat. Played straight again with the lava lake and the stepping stones.
  • Lampshade Hanging: About all the times they encounter lava in the maze.
Hobbes: Retro has a weird fixation with molten lava.
  • Minimalist Cast: There are only four characters- Calvin, Hobbes, the MTM, and Holographic Retro.
  • Season Finale
  • Spanner in the Works: Retro tried to use the electrical storm from Bodyswap to wipe Calvin's memories, but because Socrates got in the way, it only gave them a "Freaky Friday" Flip.
  • Skewed Priorities: Calvin is more interested in lecturing Hobbes for saving himself first than climbing into the passage he found to actually save himself from the lava.
  • Take That!:
Calvin (referring to how unstable the platforms they're on are): Nobody here gets vertigo, right?
    Hobbes: No, not really.
MTM: Nah, I've seen that movie three times and I still don't get it.
  • Title Drop: Sanctus Espiritus, redeem us from our solemn hour.
  • Visual Pun: The giant Bottomless Pit room has, literally, No Fourth Wall.
  • The Walls Are Closing In: Will happen an hour after Calvin and Hobbes enter the maze.
