- Brick Joke: In Hodges' retelling of the events of the fire, Brass is painted as an alcoholic. When the cadets meet the real life Brass, they tell him it's great to see he's turned his life around, to his utter confusion.
- Murder by Mistake: Or poisoning by mistake. Mona meant to only poison her ex boyfriend with donuts laced with bacteria, but he was on a post breakup diet and other police officers ate them instead, getting them ill.
- Unreliable Narrator: The main hook of the main plot is that Hodges and Wendy are telling the story of the crime as if they're the ones who are main investigators, so their depictions of the fellow CS Is don't quite match their real life counterparts.
