The guppies have to make their classroom very spooky if they want to scare Mr. Grumpfish.

- Bedsheet Ghost: The ghost in the Once per Episode recess Imagine Spot is one.
- It’s also seen as several characters’ costumes throughout the episode.
- Bowel-Breaking Bricks: Molly, Deema, and Goby scare the ghost so badly that he poops out a bucket of Halloween candy.
- Company Cross References: During their “Trick or Treat” song, Molly mentions that you can be anything you want for Halloween, even somebody on TV, and then a picture of Spongebob is shown.
- Evil Laugh: Deema does one when she’s giving Goby his costume, complete with Dramatic Thunder.
- Failed Attempt at Scaring: Mr. Grumpfish isn’t impressed with any part of the Guppies’ haunted house and only gets scared after he sees his reflection in a mirror with his jack-o-lantern face paint on.
- The Grinch: Mr. Grumpfish, of the Halloween variant.
- Halloween Episode: The Guppies work together to show Mr. Grumpfish how fun Halloween can be.

- Not Evil, Just Misunderstood: The ghost wasn’t trying to scare Molly, Deema, and Goby, it just wanted to trick or treat with them and they kept running away before he could ask.
- Not a Mask: Gil is checking out all the scary masks at the Halloween costume store and comes to the end of the shelf where Mr. Grumpfish is standing. Gil remarks that one’s the scariest of them all (referring to Mr. Grumpfish’s grumpy face), after which Mr. Grumpfish moves and scares him.
- Perpetual Frowner: Mr. Grumpfish has such a cranky-looking expression all the time that when he catches sight of it in a mirror, it even scares him!Mr. Grumpfish: It was orange and mean and it looked so...grumpy!
- Shout-Out: The carpet in the apartment Molly, Deema, and Goby go trick-or-treating in has the same pattern that the carpet in the Overlook does in The Shining.
- Vampire Vords: Goby when he’s dressed up as a vampire.
- When He Smiles: Mr. Grumpfish is so tickled by the fact that he scared himself with his own sourpuss expression that he finally sees the joy of Halloween and starts cracking up. He even breaks into song!
- Wolves Always Howl at the Moon: Gil and three little fish are dressed up as werewolves and Gil is trying to teach them how to howl at a cardboard moon. The little fish can’t quite get it right though, making chicken noises instead.Gil: We’re hairy, we’re scary, and when we see the full moon, we howl.
