Tropes

  • Borrowed Catchphrase: While Impersonating an Officer, Kevin "arrests" Holt and Jake and calls them "Punks", approximating Holt's use of the word when arresting serial killers.
  • Call-Back:
    • Once again, Holt goes apoplectic over the mention of "bone" (only this time it refers to a treat for Cheddar).
    • This episode serves as one to the Boyle-Linetti Wedding as Holt and Kevin do a proper wedding setting.
    • Once again, Holt reveals something about himself that he wasn't really hiding to Jake, flashbacks show blatant examples of the revealed fact, and Jake responds by questioning how good of a detective he is.
    • This isn't the first time Holt gets flirtatious with a woman to cover for Jake.
    • Jake again reminds everyone Amy's his wife when she does her signature dork dance.
    • Boyle brings up his Animal Nemesis Sgt. Peanutbutter when warning Rosa not to antagonize Cheddar too much.
  • Character Development:
    • Kevin undergoes this when he advises Holt to go for the promotion, despite them separating because Holt was too busy as an officer.
    • Amy finally decides to let go of her Holt-worship.
  • Embarrassing Cover-Up: Holt claims he's he's looking at porn to hide the fact that he's working during their vow renewal giving a very detailed description of what he's seeing. Later when Keven catches the whole squad planning what to do about O'Sullivan Holt claims Jakes looking at porn and gives another detailed description.
  • Foreshadowing: Jake is unusually chill when Amy freaks out over who gets to take care of Mac once Amy is promoted to chief of police reform. In the final episode, we get to know why.
  • Heroic BSoD: As expected, Amy is completely unable to move or speak at hearing of Holt's retirement.
  • I Never Told You My Name: Frank's mom calls out Jake and Holt's scheme when they call her by her son's surname, having dropped that several relationships prior, leading her to accurately deduce they are her son's enemies.
  • Idiot Ball: Jake, who usually has a professional savvy for all kinds of scams and previously spotted pyramid schemes on the spot, has fallen for several obvious crypto scams in a row.
  • Impersonating an Officer: To save Jake and Holt from O'Sullivan's mother, Kevin and Rosa (who is now a private investigator) dress as officers to "arrest" them.
  • Karma Houdini: Despite trying to wreck the Police Reform at the last minute, O'Sullivan does not get punished for it. Instead, he's re-elected for life!
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Holt doesn't tell Amy about his retirement as he wants her focused on the reform report.
  • Multitasked Conversation: With Amy on his earpiece freaking out about Holt's retirement and O'Sullivan about to bail on their plan, Terry tells the two to quit obsessing about one particular person (Holt for Amy, Billy Joel for O'Sullivan) and live their own lives.
  • Mundane Solution: Jake knocks a telephone off the cradle to tie up the only phone line Frank's mom has.
  • Pizza Boy Special Delivery: Jake suggests having Holt seduce Frank's mom to get entry to the basement. When the more straight-laced act fails, Holt charms her with Jake's lines, complete with the strange moan.
  • Running Gag: Jake investing in various cryptocurrencies, only for them to tank the moment he looks them up on his phone.
  • Skip to the End: Holt and Kevin once again rush through their vows, this time so they can get evidence to 1 Police Plaza before O'Sullivan can stop them.
  • Spotting the Thread: O'Sullivan's mother figures out Holt and Jake are not really from the gas company when Holt calls her Mrs. O'Sullivan, as she had married four times after that and no longer goes by that name.
  • The Cuckoolander Was Right: Charles ends up being right about Cheddar being vengeful against Rosa.
  • Thought They Knew Already: Terry lets it slip about Holt's retirement to Amy assuming Holt already told her when she handed in the report, which he didn't.
  • Time Skip: This episode takes place a few days after Jake's suspension expired.
  • Wham Episode: Holt begins the episode by announcing his retirement from the NYPD, though he doesn't go through it. However, he does get promoted to Deputy Commissioner, Police Reform, while Amy gets promoted to chief, effectively bringing their involvement in the 99 to an end.
