Go To

Gintars is the tenth episode of Brooklyn Nine-Nine's sixth season.

Charles is upset over the appearance of Gintars, the birth father of his adopted son Nikolaj, especially when Gintars and Nikolaj begin to bond. Jake tries to help, but his plans end up endangering his friendship with Charles. Meanwhile, Holt and Amy call in a famous forensic scientist to help Rosa on a case, but she has doubts about his methods.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Broken Pedestal: Holt and Amy are devastated when they find out that Yee's a fraud, although it doesn't take much for them to forgive him.
  • Call-Back:
    • Charles and Jake talk about Gintars being a sea witch like Gina called the loan shark who tried to fleece Jake in "The Apartment".
    • Dr. Yee first appeared in "Return to Skyfire", and Rosa brings up the episode’s incident of Amy and Holt covering Boyle’s head in plaster.
    • Once again, Charles argues about the correct pronunciation of Nikolaj's name.
  • Fake Ultimate Hero: Dr. Yee is a world-famous forensic scientist who has received millions of dollars worth of research funds due to his contribution to his field of expertise. However, it turns out that his most lauded achievement, the breeding of a species of blood-detecting flies, is nothing but a big fat lie — his research failed and he's been covering it up in order to protect his reputation.
  • For Happiness: Jake's motivation for calling Immigration on Gintars, but thoroughly deconstructed as Charles is furious with him for doing it and explains that while he knows Jake had good intentions, it was misguided of him to try to fix all of Charles' problems.
  • Inadvertent Entrance Cue: When Rosa asks for some blood to test Dr. Yee's flies, Hitchcock immediately appears with a huge, unexplained gash on his arm.
  • The Knights Who Say "Squee!": Holt and Amy still gush over Dr. Yee, a renowned forensic scientist.
  • Lopsided Dichotomy: When Jake first spots an unknown man (who turns out to be Gintars) following him and Charles, he says that based on the stranger's full denim attire he's either not American or deeply American.
Jake: I'm thinking Ukraine... or Kentucky.
  • Naked People Are Funny: Jake takes Gintars to the Russian baths with a recording device hidden under his towel. Gintars then takes off his towel and insists that Jake takes off his. Jake has to pretend that he has a mutliated penis to avoid getting found out.
  • No Brows: Terry shaves off his eyebrows after Holt informs him that there are a ton of bugs in them.
  • Not So Above It All: The Stoic Holt falls over himself for Dr. Yee.
  • Perp Sweating: Rosa ends up finding Yee's flies helpful; she uses them to intimidate the culprit into confessing by pretending they actually can detect blood.
  • Rhetorical Request Blunder: Jake overhears a depressed Charles say "I wish Gintars would just go away" and decides to get Gintars deported. In the meantime, however, Charles had come to terms with the situation, and is upset at Jake for getting Gintars arrested in front of Nikolaj.
  • Running Gag: Terry's eyebrows. Shaved, painted, painted in different style, then they are glued on, then one falls off and sticks to his finger... it escalates.
  • Shoddy Knockoff Product: Gintars' clothing line is called The Gape. He insists it has nothing to do with The Gap, and even suggests that they're copying him because it's easier to take away one letter from your name than go through the expense of adding one.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Jake checks Charles for a concussion by asking him how many musical numbers are in Zootopia.
    • Gintars passes the time by watching Mad About You on Hulu.
  • Terrified of Germs: Terry freaks out when Holt tells him there might be hundreds of microscopic mites living in his eyebrows. He ends up shaving them off and painting fake ones on top. Jake then tells him there might be mites in his goatee, which leads to him bleaching it. And then Rosa brings up his nose hairs...
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Charles chews out Jake for the whole Gintars debacle, saying that though they are friends, but Jake should learn to let him handle his problems on his own.
