Recap / Brooklyn Nine Nine S 2 E 06 Jake And Sophia

Go To

Jake and Sophia is the sixth episode of Brooklyn Nine-Nine's second season.

Jake's attempts at getting over Amy are not going well. Every date he's been on since coming back from his stint undercover hasn't amounted to much. Terry suggests that Jake try not talking about his job and points Jake towards a woman at the other end of the bar. Sophia and Jake immediately hit it off and they spend the night together. Unfortunately, the morning after, Jake and Terry discover that Sophia is the defense attorney for the man they're trying to put away for a diamond heist.

It is also time for the precinct to elect a new union representative and Rosa tries to force Amy into running against Scully, who's been doing a characteristically awful job of looking out for the Nine Nine's interests. Amy is resistant, thinking that it will be career suicide for her to go up against the senior officers who will be determining her chances of promotion in the future.

Also, Charles and Gina finalize the end of their casual relationship but end up in conflict because they both want to spend the weekend in a luxury hotel room they'd booked for a romp but neither wants to give up their claim.

Tropes present in this episode:

  • Blazing Inferno Hellfire Sauce: The hot wings that Jake and Sophia bond over don't seem too hot. Cue the delayed reaction.
  • The Cameo: Stephen Root and Sandra Bernhardt show up in the last minute as Boyle's father Lynn and Gina's mother Darlene respectively.
  • Desk Sweep of Passion: Jake goes to see Sophia in her office and dramatically sweeps everything off of her desk so they can make out. Sophia is suitably impressed but points out that her desk is the other desk in the office, on the opposite side of the room.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Charles and Gina's attempts to get the luxury weekend for themselves ends up annoying Captain Holt into forcing the two of them to work late, preventing both of them from enjoying themselves. They each unknowingly give the weekend to their parents, resulting in Charles' father and Gina's mother running into each other in a hotel room stocked for a romantic getaway...
  • Impossibly Mundane Explanation: Jake scoffs at Terry's suggestion that Amy's alarm clock didn't go off since Amy has three alarm clocks.
  • Insistent Terminology: Jake insists on referring to the crime under trial, a break-in at a jeweler's store, as a 'diamond heist'. He's thrilled when Sophia also refers to it that way in court.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • Jake's face displays a mixture of surprise and nausea when he discovers that the woman he spent the night with is also the defense attorney he's going up against.
    • Gina's face (and presumably Boyle's) when they realize that they've accidentally set both their parents up in a hotel room for a romantic weekend getaway.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business:
    • Jake becomes business-like and even adopts proper posture when briefing the squad about the case he and Terry are working on. The other detectives immediately realize something is wrong.
    • Played for laughs in the Cold Open; when Santiago is seventy seconds late for work for the first time ever, the rest of the squad — including Holt — amuse themselves by taking turns guessing why she's late. When she eventually stumbles into the precinct, they act this trope in order to get her to reveal why she was late, and who won.
  • Permanent Elected Official: Despite being a terrible union representative, Scully always runs unopposed because no one else wants the job. In fact, Scully himself doesn't even like it; he only takes it for the meat subs they serve at the union meetings.
  • Serious Business:
    • The squad treats Jake's involvement with a criminal defense attorney as being both treacherous and disgusting. Jake agrees. (Everyone seems to regard the scenario of a cop sleeping with a defense attorney as something incredibly rare and unusual.)
    • Judging by his reaction on being proved correct, Holt apparently considers the "guess why Amy's late for work" game this:
Holt: Santiago, you will tell us and you will tell us now.
Santiago: [ashamed] ... There was a problem at the bank.
      Holt: [air-punching] HOT DAMN!
  • Strange Minds Think Alike: Jake compares sleeping with a defense attorney to be like sleeping with Hans Gruber. Sophia later makes the exact same comparison.
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute: Reviewers and commenters have noted that Sophia is similar to Amy in a lot of ways (they are both ambitious and adorkable Latinas with whom Jake shares an adversarial yet mutually respectful relationship) and that it explains why Jake is so attracted to Sophia.
