The remains of a maritime museum security guard found in the Florida Everglades alongside fragments of a 18th-century Nautical treasure chart requires Booth to call upon an old friend to help in the investigation: Walter Sherman (Geoff Stults), a former U.S. soldier and Iraq war veteran, who has the ability to unearth anything with the help of his own quirky squad of friends.
Tropes
- Catchphrase: Walter's "Imma risk it."
- Comically Missing the Point: Booth tells Bones that he knows a diviner. Bones fails to understand that he is saying he wants to ask for the diviner's help with the case, and conversationally replies that she knows a guy who can to polynomial equations in his head.
- Continuity Nod:
- Booth and Brennan's Unresolved Sexual Tension, which Walter immediately picks up on:
Walter: Are you two sleeping together?
Brennan: (laughing) No.
Booth: No.
Walter: (to Brennan) Would you sleep with me?
Booth: ('quietly) You know what? You find the map, maybe you got a shot. (Brennan hits him)- Also, Brennan's strong feelings for her mother. When she challenges Walter to find a science fair medal she won in grade school, Walter not only finds that, but also finds a newspaper story with a picture of her mother, which moves her to Tears of Joy.
- The Dulcinea Effect: Walter ends up trying to find out who killed a woman he only knew for one night.
- Funny Background Event: Ike offers Brennan a beer as Booth and Walter, in Ike's words, "get reacquainted" - fight in the background.
- Poorly Disguised Pilot: For Fox's The Finder, which was also directed by Hart Hanson.
- Properly Paranoid: Lampshaded by Walter, when he asks of Ike and Leo, "How can it be paranoia when my best friends are actually conspiring behind my back?"
- Scenery Censor: Walter talks to Brennan while on the toilet with his boxers down. The only reason we don’t see his naughty bits is a strategically placed sink between him and the camera.
- Sexiness Score: Walter asks Hodgins if he's rich when he finds out he's married to Angela because "On a Scale from One to Ten, she's an 11" and Hodgins is a "7".
Walter: Who are you?
Hodgins: I'm her husband.
Walter: Huh. Are you rich?
Hodgins: Okay, where did that come from?
Walter: On a Scale from One to Ten, she's an eleven.
Angela: Well, thank you, Mr. Sherman.
Walter: Yeah, you're a seven. So if you're rich it just explains the discrepancy.
- Terrifying Pet Store Rat: The vermin crawling on the swamp-dredged remains are that staple filming stand-in, the Madagascar hissing cockroach.
- Ugly Guy, Hot Wife: Walter thinks this about Hodgins and Angela, believing Angela is only with Hodgins because he's rich.
