Recap / Bones S 2 E 14 The Man In The Mansion

Go To

A rich man is murdered, and his blood is found on the corpse of a fourteen-year-old drug dealer killed about three weeks earlier. The victim's widow was engaged to Hodgins years ago, and his decision to stay on the case by hiding the fact ends up invalidating a lot of the evidence.

Tropes

  • Bigger Is Better in Bed: Discussed by Bones, who overhears two women talk about Sully's reluctance to shower with other men. Bones assures Sully that only other men care about penis size, and claims that women don't. On the other hand she does seem very happy to discover that Sully is...rather well equipped.
  • Casting Gag: The actress who plays Hodgins's high school sweetheart also plays Hotch's high school sweetheart on Criminal Minds.
  • Compensating for Something: Discussed by Bones. She assures Sully that his prowess on the basketball field proves his manhood very convincingly. Later she talks to Angela about this being why he hasn't made a move on her yet. Ultimately subverted as his nickname, Peanut, is an Ironic Nickname.
  • Continuity Nod: Caroline drops a bunch of these when calling out the team for overreacting to Hodgins's little rule breach.
Caroline: Listen up, you people. The verdict is gonna come down any minute. Maybe we'll win, maybe we'll lose, but this I do know: You people have got to get your sand together, you hear me? Booth and you scientist android brainiacs, you got something very special here. But you are losing it. Dropping serial killers off balconies, and blabbing suspects names to vengeful fathers, cutting into heads before their times, getting poisoned, getting blown up because you go grabbing for things you shouldn't ought, taking photographs from frames, getting a perfectly good car smashed to bits for no good reason! Get it together! Start using your oversized heads. This is the real world!
  • Framed Clue: Subverted, when Hodgins is taking samples from a crime scene and when nobody is looking opens up a frame and removes a picture that showed him and Terence Bancroft, together before anyone noticed. The picture is NOT a clue related to the case, but would have revealed Hodgins past connection to the victim (childhood friends until he stole Hodgin's fiancĂ©e) and stopped him from helping to solve his old friend's murder.
  • Hidden Depths: When Hodgins is taken off the case, it falls on the rest of the team to analyze a fungus. Brennan and Zack find themselves out of their depth, but Angela turns out to have picked up a lot from Hodgins.
  • I Never Told You My Name: Hodgins connection to the victim's wife is revealed when she uses his first name after Booth had only introduced him as "Dr Hodgins." She tries to cover but Hodgins, knowing Booth isn't easily fooled, decides to come clean.
  • Mistaken for Cheating: Subverted. While angry at Hodgins Booth accuses him of jeopardising the case to try to get into his ex-girlfriend's pants (very much not his objective) right in front of Angela but Angela doesn't believe this and there is no strain on their relationship.
  • Taken Off the Case: Entomologist Dr. Hodgins hides his personal connection to the victim, including a past engagement to his widow, since it would get him taken off the case and he wants to help catch the person who killed him. When the truth about his connection comes out, not only is he taken off, but any evidence he touched is thrown out as being compromised. This causes the rest of the team to scramble to make up for it.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Caroline gives a spectacular one to the whole team for even considering accepting Hodgins's resignation after he attempts to remain on a case he's personally involved in and it nearly gets their case kicked out of court.
