Recap / Bobs Burgers S 13 E 8 Putts Giving

Go To

The Belchers go to a mini golf course on Thanksgiving morning.

Putts-Troping:

  • Always Someone Better: Bob proves to be much better at mini-golf than Linda, routinely getting scores like 2 or 3 while Linda consistently gets upwards of 7 and 8.
Bob: Don't beat yourself up, Lin. We are beating you so badly already.
  • Big Sister Instinct: When she finds out Gene and Louise broke the Yeti, Tina abandons her attempts to ask her parents for permission to go to a party to help Gene and Louise fix it so they don't get in trouble.
  • Bittersweet Ending:
    • On the kids' end: The kids get grounded for breaking the yeti animatronic so Tina can't attend the bonfire, but she and Louise make up after a falling out early in the episode.
    • On the adults' end: Linda doesn't get a second hole-in-one and Bob has to pay for the yeti animatronic’s repairs, but Linda accepts the first hole-in-one she got and Bob's plans for Thanksgiving dinner otherwise go well for a change.
  • Call-Back: Tina spends the entire episode hyped up about a bonfire beach party. It isn't the first time.
    • Big Dummy makes an appearance as one of the obstacles at Planet Mystery World.
  • Didn't Think This Through: The owner of the mini-golf course really believes people will come to play at his course by putting a half-off deal...on Thanksgiving, when everyone is busy preparing for their feasts.
  • Double Entendre: Planet Mystery World's slogan is "your balls won't know what hit them".
  • Gift-Giving Gaffe: When distracting the minigolf course owner so that he doesn't notice the broken yeti, Tina asks him why he has a statue depicting a pair of anthropomorphic lizards in holiday clothes holding each other next to the minigolf course's kiosk. Turns out he somehow got the idea that it would be a great wedding anniversary present and the statue is supposed to be him and his wife, but she got mad and refused to let him keep it in the house.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Linda tells the kids not to hit each other with their clubs. When she walks away to the next hole, she carelessly swings her club behind her, nearly hitting poor Bob.
  • MacGyvering: Tina, Gene, and Louise fix the Yeti's broken gear shaft with mini pencils. Lots and lots and lots of mini pencils. It barely holds up afterwards, but when another family happens to visit the course the same day, it falls off the second their golf ball touches it.
  • Mini-Golf Episode: The Belchers spend their Thanksgiving morning playing mini-golf.
  • Never My Fault:
    • After breaking the yeti animatronic, Louise questions whose idea it was to even go to the mini-golf course. Naturally, it was hers.
    • Linda makes any excuse possible for not getting a hole-in-one besides the fact that she's bad at the game.
  • Oh, Crap!: The kids have one when realizing they're no longer the only customers at the mini-golf course, meaning the broken yeti is about to be discovered.
  • The Perfectionist: After getting a taste of power from getting a hole-in-one, Linda is so devoted to getting another that she keeps restarting a hole when she doesn't get one. If not for Bob moving things along she'd still be back at the earlier stages of the course.
  • Persona Non Grata: The kids are banned from Planet Mystery World after they break the yeti.
  • Pushover Parents: Averted with Bob and Linda, who usually are this trope, in this episode. Because the kids’ antics resulted in them breaking a yeti animatronic and their parents have to pay for the repairs, the kids end up grounded as a result.
  • Run for the Border: After he and Louise break the animatronic yeti, Gene suggests fleeing to Mexico with the yeti's legs.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Sore Loser: Rather than acknowledge the fact that Bob probably curbstomped her, Linda threw out the scorecard.
  • Suspiciously Specific Denial: Gene wants to put up a sign on the yeti saying, "Out of order, but not because two great kids broke it."
  • Thanksgiving Episode: The annual one of the season... Well, mostly in-name only, as the episode doesn't exactly revolve around it for taking place in an empty mini-golf course without Thanksgiving stuff.
  • Tranquil Fury: Although they don't raise their voices during the drive home, Bob and Linda are clearly fuming at their kids costing them a whole lot of money, going as far to mess with them by openly considering to ditch them somewhere.
  • You Are Grounded!: Bob and Linda actually ground the kids since they're now being forced to pay the course owner for repairs.
