Sock Puppet and Shoe Head

Original air date: 11/20/2019

Another silly day is born in Storybook World, our already peculiar host has an extra peculiarity today, he is trying to be funny, and with a shoe on his head. After trying the same trick that works with the viewer and failing, Josh asks his puppy what would make her laugh, and the unpredictable happens: We are gonna Blue's clues to figure out What could make Blue laugh!

After pushing away pawprint with a silly monster hat, Josh learns that he's not the only one trying to be funny and receives a handy-dandy potato from Sidetable. So with the help of Mr. Sock Puppet we set out in search of clues. It doesn't take long as a ball soon hits Josh and reveals the second clue from Mr. Sock Puppet's mouth. The first clue is a Yellow ball.

Josh hears laughter coming from the back yard, coming from Shovel and Pail who are playing a game with Gopher. Upon realizing that Gopher is definitely a mastermind, Josh looks for a pattern in the way he acts, realizing that he only goes after yellow things, like sunflowers, Shovel, and a toy car, coming to the conclusion that he would come out close to a yellow ball. When the game is complete, Gopher seems to have something extra to deliver and throws something out of his tunnel, when the viewer points out that he saw a clue Josh thinks they are trying to fool him, before realizing there is a clue, a purple ball. The second clue is a purple ball.

After Mailtime, where Josh and Mailbox try to make each other laugh the same way and Josh receives an upside-down letter from two kids making silly faces. Blue and Josh skidoo in a book that leads us to Silly town, which completely defies logic, and Josh puts on his silly hat to blend in. We are soon introduced to Mayor Billy Chicken hatching from an egg, who gives Josh a little tour around the city. When we return home, something seems off, the viewer sees a blue pawprint on something. A ball. The third clue is a red ball

We have the three clues and we are ready to find out what would make Blue laugh with three balls, one yellow, one purple and one red. With no possible wrong answers, Josh knows what Blue wants him to do: Juggling! Juggling is the thing that would make Blue laugh.

Ready to start juggling, after being interrupted by Shovel, Pail, Gopher and Billy Chicken, he finally makes Blue laugh, when he pretends to be eating the juggling balls, along with everyone else. After succeeding, it's time for the so long, where Josh is interrupted by Mr. Sock Puppet and the two sing one more song in a “duet”. We move away once again and see the door close, in farewell Blue gives us a lick on the face.

  • Adaptational Nice Guy: Gopher is much friendlier here than in the original series, laughing with Josh and appearing on good terms with him, compared to the slightly more aggressive and trollish character that was on the original series. Just like in the original series, he delivers the second clue, but doesn't try to fool Josh like he does with Steve, which is fair, because unlike Steve, Josh isn't competitive when it comes to Gopher's games and doesn't try to outsmart him.
  • Consulting Mister Puppet: Sock Puppet acts as if it has a life of its own in a way that is inconvenient for Josh (Later "Sage and Ginger’s baby book" would imply this to be the case, which makes Josh nervous).
  • Creative Closing Credits: At the end of the episode we see Mayor Billy Chicken walking like a non-anthropomorphic chicken, a possum being hit by rain falling from his umbrella and Snail driving backwards in a car.
  • Fleeting Demographic Rule: An updated version of “What’s So Funny?”.
  • Friendly Rivalry: Josh's rivalry with Gopher is much more friendly than the one Steve had with him, as they can be seen celebrating together and Josh starts laughing after pretending to be grumpy with him.
  • The Gadfly:
    • Josh spends the entire episode trying to be funny, and make others laugh. It works on everyone except Blue, at least until the end of the episode.
    • Gopher as usual spends some time trolling both Josh, Shovel and Pail with his games.
    • Sidetable hands Josh a potato instead of his handy-dandy notebook knowing he wouldn't notice.
  • Hand Puppet: Mr. Sock Puppet, Josh's hilariously inconvenient sock puppet.
  • Internal Homage: This episode is a homage to the episode "What's So Funny?" from the original series.
  • No-Sell: Josh's tactics for being funny work on almost everyone except Blue, who is the one he is trying to make laugh.
  • Running Gag: Mr. Sock Puppet handing Josh a potato instead of the Handy Dandy Notebook.
  • Special Thanks: The credits thank the people who worked on the original series' episode "What's So Funny?".
  • Toontown: Silly Town, appears to be where different types of cartoons (from multiple different skidoo worlds) can live together, being silly. As Josh points out, Silly Town makes no sense at all and defies the laws of logic even more than the other locations in Storybook World.
  • Wormsign: Gopher leaves several behind when he climbs out of a hole.
