Jennifer wants Tobias' blood for killing Khalil. Meanwhile Markovia agents have come to Freeland, hoping to get their hands on the Pod Kids and any other metas for their own metahuman program.

  • Bad Boss: Subverted, it seems like Tobias will play this trope straight when Todd tells him he doesn't know how long it'll take to awaken the metas in the pods. But when Todd points out the tech holding them in stasis is ancient by today's standards and he has no idea how to operate it, Tobias is understanding and simply decides to recruit Dr. Jace full time.
  • Big Bad Ensemble: Markovia who want to kidnap scientists and metas for their own program.
  • Calling the Old Man Out: Jennifer is the first student to stand up to Lowry pointing out he's apathetic towards the students by taking down a monument of Khalil, and also calls him racist (Which, as he points out, Lowry isn't, he's just a hardass to everyone, and expects everyone else to follow his rules).
  • Comes Great Responsibility: Jefferson tells Jennifer, "The power to do amazing things comes with the responsibility to do the right thing."
  • Easily Forgiven: Despite his attack on the school, the student body by and large have forgiven Khalil, even setting up an impromptu memorial in the school in his memory.
  • Hidden Depths: Turns out Lowry's parents were drugs addicts and he spent time sleeping on the street and ate dog food. But it doesn't justify his apathy towards his students one bit.
    Jefferson: Good talk.
  • Jerkass: Lowry orders the memorial of Khalil to be torn down, which has Jennifer put it back up again and does a sit-on protest.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Lowry's reasoning for the above does actually have some sense, even though he's being a Jerkass and probably could have explained it with a lighter tone. Khalil went to the school and terrorised teachers, students, even putting some to sleep with his darts, in order to draw out Black Lightning. Probably not wise to keep a memoriam up for too long, so as to not remind those that were affected. Considering Khalil is Easily Forgiven by everyone for seemingly no reason, the point is moot regardless.
  • Karma Houdini: The Markovia agents have diplomatic immunity so the only thing that happens to them is that they're put on a plane back home.
  • Kirk Summation: When Lowry points out Khalil's stint as a gang member, Jennifer counters back pointing out he was a crippled kid who was given a chance to walk again and he took it, and how Lowry doesn't given a damn about the kids it's his job to look after.
  • A Lighter Shade of Gray: Whatever the ASA's faults, they are decidedly more preferable to Markovia.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Odell doesn't tell Lynn that Markovia agents are in Freeland and they need to move the pods for their safety. This just makes Lynn distrust him even more, especially since he freed Dr. Jace to do it.
  • Mugging the Monster: A group of Markovian agents try to abduct Perenna. Big mistake.
  • Papa Wolf: Jefferson is not happy when Lowry has security escort Jennifer out of school, when all he had to was call him and he would've talked her down.
  • Revenge: Jennifer wants to kill Tobias. Jefferson tries to talk her out of it.
  • Sealed Evil in a Can: Todd informs Tobias that the metas in the pods were violent criminals even before they were given their powers.
  • Wham Shot: After Jennifer leaves Khalil's grave, Agent Odell is revealed to have been tailing her, imply he knows the Pierce family's secret.
  • Wife-Basher Basher: Anissa retaliates after learning that one of her patients was a victim of domestic abuse.
