• Beyond the Impossible: Manny's towers of soup. Although according to Bernard, they're rubbish because they don't have turrets.
• Buffy Speak: As Manny and Bernard panic in the kitchen.
  Bernard: Where's the thing?
  Manny: It's on top of the thing!
• Closest Thing We Got: Bernard's restaurant runs out of plates, so he uses recipe books with pictures of plates on them.
• Lethal Chef: When Bernard runs out of ingredients he starts cooking with paint, his belt and bits of oven.
• Running Gag: Manny and Bernard exterminating the creatures living in the shop.
• Suddenly Shouting: Manny is insisting he and Bernard wear headsets to communicate with each other. Bernard is not having it.
  Manny: (puts on his headset) I'm back now.
  Bernard: I KNOW!
• Take That!: This episode takes digs at bookshop chains such as Waterstones that sell coffee and have large sofas.
