Recap / Birds of a Feather S9E4: Model

Go To

  • Date First Aired: 07/12/1998

Sharon is heading out to shop with Dorien, but not before an awkward conversation with Tracey regarding her size. At the Department Store, Sharon is watched by a woman, who is interested in her size for a modeling agency and wants her to audition, although Tracey mocks her for this. Dorien however is more optimistic and helps her out as her unwanted manager.

At the audition, Sharon comes into conflict with a nasty model, but she manages to get the job, (although it's only a one-off), much to the jealousy of the other girls. This is especially true of Tracey, who also feels like her new baby will ruin her life and heads off for the clinic alone, where she finds that the baby is small and that she's due for an emergency scan. The actual modeling session for Sharon goes well and she even gets to one-up Emily the bitchy model, but her mood sours after she hears about Tracey. Thankfully, the baby's fine and Tracey even gets to learn about its gender, although what it is is not revealed to the audience quite yet.

This episode contains the following tropes:

  • Alliterative Name: Rodney Reigate, who tries to get a piece on Sharon for a gardening magazine.
  • Big Beautiful Woman: Sharon initially claims to believe that big is beautiful after an awkward conversation with Tracey regarding her size, although she later admits that she doesn't believe them herself. However, she manages to show off her size in a positive way for the modeling agency.
Sharon: Why should I punish myself just because society says anyone over a size 16 belongs in a circus? Big is what I am and big is beautiful!
Tracey: Good for you. That's right!
Sharon: No it's not, you stupid cow.
  • Blah, Blah, Blah: Used when Sharon finds a piece on her in the newspaper:
Sharon: "Local girl wins modeling contract. Sharon Theodopolopodus... blah, blah, blah... I hope to be Hainault's answer to Sophie Dahl" quipped glamorous Sharon.
  • Continuity Nod: Sharon reuses her old Stage Name from "Okey-Cokey-Karaoke".
  • Fee Fi Faux Pas: Tracey, on the topic of wearing Sharon's clothes, accidentally suggests by saying that after the baby's born, she'll go back to normal, she's saying that Sharon isn't normal.
Tracey: I mean, once the baby's born, I'll be normal again. (Beat) I'm not saying that you're not normal. I mean of course, you're normal. I mean normal for me. Being big is normal for you. Oh for god's sake, you know what I mean.
  • Human Doorstop: Sharon uses Emily as a footstool during her modeling session.
  • Jerkass: Emily is an absolute git who constantly mocks her appearance.
  • The Ghost: Michael, who Dorien is having a relationship with in an attempt to get over Richard.
  • In Vino Veritas: Dorien reveals the fact that Tracey is due for an emergency scan to Sharon whilst heavily drunk.
  • It's All My Fault: Tracey's reaction to her finding out that she needs to go for an emergency scan, fearing that it was due to her remarks about it the previous day that led to the baby being small.
  • Mistaken Age: The newspaper mistakenly prints Tracey's age as 49 (she's actually around about 37 - the former is in fact Dorien's age).
  • Mistaken for Thief: Thanks to a poor choice of words, Tracey and Dorien believe that Sharon shoplifted from the department store.
  • My God, You Are Serious!: Dorien and Tracey break into laughter after Sharon reveals that she is due to audition for a modeling agency before eventually realizing that she's serious.
  • New Job Episode: Sharon gets a job as a model with a modeling agency, although the whole thing was only intended to be a one-off.
  • One-Shot Character: Babs, Keith, Emily, and Rodney Reigate.
  • On the Rebound: After the tragic ending of her relationship with Richard, Dorien gets into a relationship with a man named Michael.
  • One-Word Title: The episode's name is "Model".
  • Ooh, Me Accent's Slipping: Both Rodney Reigate and Sharon herself gradually ditch the fake posh accents when the nature of his proposed work is revealed.
  • Potty Failure: Thanks to her pregnancy, Tracey is incontinent, much to her angst.
  • Saying Too Much: Once Sharon comes back from her job as a model, Dorien accidentally and drunkenly lets it slip that Tracey has gone in for an emergency scan. She admits that she might have said too much.
  • Sex Sells: Rodney Reigate wants Sharon to do a two-page spread for what is allegedly a gardening magazine.
  • Shirtless Scene: Dorien comes across a male model with his shirt off.
  • Shout-Out: Sharon notes early on that she feels like Quasimodo on a bad hump day.
  • Sleazy Photoshoot: Tracey fears that Sharon's modeling career will turn out to be this, with them trying to get her to become drunk so that she can strip naked. The actual thing however turns out fine.
  • Stage Name: Sharon goes under "Sharon T." during her career as a modeller.
  • The Unreveal: Tracey learns about the gender of her new baby after the nurse whispers it into her ear although it's too inaudible for the audience to hear. It is eventually revealed to be a boy in "Holy Ground".
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Sharon tears the others a new one for mocking her for the fact that she's going to do modelling work, although they didn't realise that she was serious.
