We open the episode on Sharon kissing the man she was with last episode goodbye as he heads to Tenerife. As she heads into the house, Tracey warns her of getting STDs, or even pregnancy. Sharon also notices that Tracey has given herself a pregnancy test, thinking herself to be pregnant.

During her prison visit with Darryl, she reveals that their bank account has been unfrozen and Sharon's relationship with Dave. She also reveals that she's pregnant. Dorien comes over to their house to congratulate her but Tracey reveals that Darryl doesn't think the baby to be his child.

Tracey goes to have an examination but it turns out that Tracey is having a phantom pregnancy and isn't actually having a baby. Regardless, Sharon asks for a check-over herself just to be sure. As it turns out, Sharon is actually pregnant herself.

Sharon is shocked since she had been previously been told that she wasn't able to have children. Tracey breaks the news to Dave, which ends up annoying Sharon. She also reveals that she has gotten an abortion, having decided not to let a baby tie her down to Dave and believing Dave to be like all of the other men. All this whilst Dave was telling his mother that she was going to be a nan.

Tropes In This Episode:

  • Aborted Arc: Dave and all mention of Sharon's abortion disappear until the Series 3 episode "Baby Come Back".
  • Abortion Fallout Drama: Sharon's abortion is not Played for Laughs and she is shown to be distraught over the whole thing, especially when it's implied that Dave would have been a decent person to help raise the child with.
  • Auto Erotica: According to Sharon, she and Dave had sex in the back of a British Telecoms van.
  • Big "WHAT?!":
    • Chris lets off one when Sharon tells him she's cheating on him.
    • Darryl gets one in the same scene when Tracey tells him she's pregnant.
  • Brick Joke: In the first scene Sharon makes a joke about to Dave about not giving her an STD. Later in the episode she finds out he gave her thrush.
  • But I Can't Be Pregnant!: Sharon is horrified when told she's pregnant because Chris always told her she was infertile.
  • Comedic Work, Serious Scene: The episode ends with a scene Played for Drama in which Sharon breaks down whilst admitting to Tracey that she has just had an abortion.
  • Continuity Nod: Tracey explains to Darryl that Ranjith managed to fix her bank account issues from the last episode, "Shift". Sharon is also shown to continue her relationship with Dave from the same episode.
  • Deadly Euphemism: The word "abortion" is never spoken. The characters make it clear that that is what has happened using only oblique references.
  • Downer Ending: The episode ends with Sharon crying as she tells Tracey she had an abortion just as Dave calls his mum to tell her she's going to be a nan.
  • Mistaken for Cheating: Darryl doesn't believe Tracey's baby is his.
  • Mistaken for Gay:
    • Sharon always thought that the prison chaplain was gay, and this is furthered when she misinterprets a comment from Tracey that makes her believe he's got a crush on Darryl.
    • Rodney initially thinks that Tracey and Sharon are lesbian lovers that got impregnated by artificial insemination of a donor's sperm and are only pretending to be sisters.
Sharon: Hang on... He reckons we're a pair of lesbians! Either that or you've had it off with a kebab.
  • Mistaken for Pregnant: Tracey thinks she's carrying Darryl's baby, although in reality it was only a phantom pregnancy.
  • Noodle Incident: Dave has had to call his mum from a Spanish police station once before.
  • One-Shot Character: Rodney Kauffman.

  • Shout-Out: Chris calls Tracey "Mother Theresa".
  • Show Within a Show: Women's Troubles, a phone-in radio show.
  • Take That!: Alan Whicker is used by Sharon to mean "knickers" in Cockney Rhyming Slang.
  • Title Drop: By Dorien.
    Dorien: He does a late-night program, on capital radio. A phone-in, Women's Troubles, it's a fascinating program.
  • Unexpected Positive: Tracey goes to get examined for her pregnancy. After it turns out that she's not pregnant, Sharon decides to get herself a check-up too, since she's worried about an itch she has. This is how she winds up finding out that she's pregnant.
  • Unusual Euphemism: Sharon uses Stoke-on-Trent to refer to gay people.
