Recap / Big Hero 6 The Series S 1 E 12 Kentucky Kaiju

Go To

After a fight with Globby leaves him feeling unsure of his worth to the team, Hiro creates a suit to give him super-strength.

Meanwhile, Fred attempts to create a life-sized replica of a movie monster.

Tropes in this episode:

  • Batman Gambit: Obake sent Globby to rob the bank in the start of the episode, not to steal anything, but to plant doubts in Hiro's head so he can gauge his intelligence.
  • Butt-Monkey: Karmi is only in this episode to first have a chair accidentally launched at her head, which she barely manages to avoid, and then to have half a bottle of ketchup splattered all over her.
  • Clingy Costume: Hiro can't remove his tech suit, so he's stuck with super strength and unable to control it.
  • Co-Dragons: Obake is keeping Globby and Noodle Burger Boy as closer underlings than the distant way he treated Yama.
  • Does Not Know His Own Strength: Hiro is unable to modulate the strength his suit gives him, leading him to break stuff accidentally - twice inadvertently causing trouble for Karmi.
  • Gone Horribly Wrong: Fred just wanted a real-size kaiju animatronic. He didn't expect Noodle Burger Boy to hijack it.
  • Misleading Package Size: Fred's Kentucky Kaiju animatronic came on a large shipping crate, but when he opens it, it's mostly full of packing peanuts. The animatronic is actually two feet tall.
  • Mythology Gag: The Kentucky Kaiju is a robot looking like a kaiju, just like the original Baymax from the comics. While robots disguised as organic monsters is nothing new, it has the same green bipedal lizard looks that Baymax sported at first.
  • Never Heard That One Before: Obake is completely unimpressed with Hiro's application of the Neo-Fiber, one reason of which being Hiro rushed it (with unexpected results), but also because he's apparently already seen other people try to use it that way.
  • Only a Model: Fred was expecting a full-sized Kentucky Kaiju animatronic, so he's disappointed that it's a miniature. The size of the shipping container certainly helps in misleading him.
  • Sarcasm Mode: This moment here:
Fred: I paid to have a 1-to-1 scale replica of the Kentucky Kaiju made out of a giant crane; obviously.
Wasabi: Oh, yeah, sure; of course. 'CAUSE THAT MAKES SENSE!
  • Saw Star Wars 27 Times: Fred has seen Kentucky Kaiju six times already. He bonds with the guy next in line, who is seeing it for the eighth time.
  • Super-Strength: The power Hiro decides to give himself so he can pull his own weight in battle.
  • Unusually Uninteresting Sight: Fred's dad is fighting off a horde of mummies in an Ancient Egyptian tomb as he's talking to Hiro, and not once does Hiro comment on it. This is also the first time something supernatural has appeared in Big Hero 6.
  • Wham Episode: Big Hero 6 are now aware that someone (Obake) is working behind the scenes with these villains.
  • The Villain Knows Where You Live: Obake visits Aunt Cass's café.
  • You Can See That, Right?:
Wasabi: Uh, guys... are you seeing what I'm seeing?
Hiro: You mean a giant lizard that came out of the water?
Wasabi: (relieved) Oh, good; you see it too.
