Hang onto your beans... whether you're from the city, the country, or even the suburbs.
Coffee Quest

With one more step until Cricket's debt is cleared, Cricket and Gloria try to deliver some coffee beans to Big Coffee while avoiding Chip Whistler's tricks, and Cricket soon discovers a secret about Gloria.

"Coffee Quest" contains examples of:

  • Action Girl: Gloria is revealed to have taken martial arts, and manages to knock out Chip's indestructible polymer with a single kick.
  • Confusion Fu: The "Tilly Tornado" doesn't hurt Chip so much as confuse him long enough for Cricket and Gloria to get away.
  • Cross-Popping Veins: Chip has these briefly before chasing Cricket and Gloria.
  • Darker and Edgier: With Chip stalking up on Cricket and especially the ultimatum he makes, this could foreshadow things getting really intense.
  • Emerging from the Shadows: Chip does it when he reveals himself to Cricket at the docks. Tilly later does it when meeting up with Cricket and Gloria in her apartment ally.
  • Five-Second Foreshadowing: The first thing Gloria's parrot says, prior to Cricket finding the photo of her parents in the suburbs, is, "I'm lonely, I miss home."
  • Hidden Depths: We learn Gloria once took taekwondo and youth soccer.
  • Mid-Season Twist: Not only is Gloria's true life revealed, Cricket is her permanent employee. Also, Chip is now vowing to run Cricket and his family out of town someday.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Not spoken out loud, but Cricket and Gloria's expressions at the end, after Cricket is once again indebted to work at the coffee shop, suggests this is what they are thinking.
  • Polly Wants a Microphone: Gloria's parrot shows how lonely she is by repeating things like "I'm so lonely, I miss home" and "Gotta get more ice-cream, can't believe I ate the whole thing again."
  • Pre Ass Kicking One Liner:
Gloria: Sorry, Chip! I'm no city girl, I'M FROM THE SUBURBS!
  • Pyrrhic Victory: The coffee beans have been delivered, and Gloria allows Cricket to keep his job...but he actually will lose his job later, along with Gloria.
  • The Reveal: Gloria is not from Big City; she's from the suburbs.
  • Sequel Episode: To "Critterball Crisis", as Cricket is close to clearing his debt made in said episode.
  • Sequel Hook: Chip's ultimatum after Cricket and Gloria escape shows this won't be the last we see of him and vows he will run Cricket and the Greens out of Big City someday.
  • Spin Attack: The "Tilly Tornado", which is not much of an attack, but it makes for a handy distraction.
  • Status Quo Is God: In the end, Cricket is finally out of debt and can quit his job, but he and Gloria are suddenly down as they will miss each other, so Gloria causes a mess and puts the blame on Cricket so he doesn't have to leave after all.
  • We Can Rule Together: Chip convinces Gloria to work with him at Wholesome Foods. Naturally, she refuses.
  • We Will Meet Again: Chip's words following Cricket and Gloria's escape, which in turn begins his Series Goal to run Cricket and his family out of town some day.
Chip: One of these days, Cricket Green, I'm gonna run your family out of this town! Mark my words: Big City is no place for the Greens!
  • Wham Episode: Cricket discovers Gloria is not from Big City as he thought. Also, he now works at Big Coffee forever.
  • Wham Line: On the photo of Gloria and her parents.
Good luck in Big City! Love, Mom and Dad.

"Man's best friend" has taken on an entire new meaning...
Phoenix Rises

When Phoenix runs away after being unappreciated, Cricket and the Greens set out to search for her. Also, Cricket and Tilly's mom, Nancy Green, returns.

"Phoenix Rises" contains examples of:

  • Bad Guy Bar: The Greens track down Phoenix to a biker bar, and almost get in trouble when Cricket confronts the bikers inside.
  • Big "WHAT?!": By Remy at the end when he sees the return of the Greens' mother.
  • Chekhov's Gun: Cricket's Psychic Link with Phoenix comes in handy near the end as he can hear her barking miles away once back at the house, and screams for her to come back.
  • Dude, Not Funny!: While Cricket recalls the time he was stuck in a hole all day fondly, Bill's reaction is less happy.
Bill: [with Thousand-Yard Stare] I thought I've lost my baby boy!
  • Eye Recall: Done by Phoenix as she remembers running away and what she did while she went missing.
  • The Faceless: Nancy in Cricket's flashback to when he first got Phoenix.
  • Five-Second Foreshadowing: Remy says that Cricket's whole family is back together again after Pheonic returns a second before Nancy rides up and reveals that she's finally out of prison.
  • Foreshadowing:
    • In Cricket's flashback to how the family first found Phoenix, his mom can be briefly seen to have biker-esque tattoos on her arm, and the two locations Cricket finds her trail at are a gas station and a biker club, hinting at Nancy's presence before the ending.
    • Pheonix's shedding fur turns out to be the means by which the Green family can track her down after she escapes at the gas station.
  • It's All My Fault: Cricket admits this during his Heroic BSoD.
  • Meaningful Name: Phoenix got her name when she was found among the ashes of the Green's burned down barn.
  • Psychic Link: Cricket is revealed to have one with Phoenix so he can tell when she's around.
  • The Reveal: The reason Phoenix ran away is because she caught the scent of Nancy, Bill's ex-wife and Cricket and Tilly's mother, who had just gotten out of prison.
  • Tears of Remorse: Cricket sheds these as he thinks Phoenix is gone for good.
  • Tropey, Come Home: Phoenix runs away, and the Greens spend the rest of the episode looking for her.
  • Wham Line: When the biker who brought Phoenix back removes her helmet.
Bill: Well, look who finally got out of jail.
    Nancy: Hey kiddos.
    Cricket and Tilly: Mom!
    Remy: Whaaaaaaa?!
