Recap / Batwoman 2019 S 3 E 12 Were All Mad Here

Go To

Alice's delusions grow worse as she searches for the joy buzzer, while Marquis plots revenge against his mother.

Tropes:

  • Ain't Too Proud to Beg: Alice devolves into a crying, blubbering mess when she is overpowered and the joy buzzer is taken from her.
  • All for Nothing: Alice cuts a deal with Marquis to get the joy buzzer, only to have it taken from her by Batwing before she's shipped back to Arkham in the company of her delusions.
  • All Just a Dream: Alice gets the buzzer, seemingly shocks herself to sanity, the charges dropped... and it's all a hallucination in her mind.
  • The Atoner: Mary plans on confessing to the hunter's grieving family that she was the one who killed him. However, Alice takes the fall for her.
  • Bad People Abuse Animals: James Gordon Jr. once tied a dog to train tracks to be run over.
  • Be All My Sins Remembered: The theme of Alice's delusions. Subconsciously, she's aware that using the joy buzzer to potentially restore herself as Beth won't appease the people she hurt (Ryan) or bring back those she killed/got killed (Mouse, Ocean) as Alice.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Luke saves Sophie with a well-thrown Batarang when Alice has her at gunpoint.
  • Brick Joke: First Luke, and at the end Mary points out how Sophie keeps wearing the same clothes.
  • The Bus Came Back: Ocean and Mouse appear in Alice's hallucinations, as manifestations of her guilt.
  • Disownment: Jada disowns Marquis, telling him that he is no longer her son.
  • Dropped a Bridge on Her: When Alice tries to force Kiki to make a new joy buzzer, Marquis suddenly appears and shoots Kiki dead, for seemingly no reason whatsoever.
  • Failed a Spot Check: Marquis kidnaps Jada by sending an identical car to pick her up ahead of the actual one, and Jada doesn't notice it has the wrong driver because she's busy talking to Sophie.
  • The Faceless: The Joker's face is not fully seen in the flashbacks; nonetheless, we do get our most detailed look at him yet, and we can distinctly hear his laughter.
  • High-Altitude Interrogation: What Ryan does to Marquis's lawyer.
  • I Did What I Had to Do: How Jada justifies herself when Sophie confronts her on still being in contact with the Black Glove Society. She wants to keep Ryan safe above all else.
  • I Have No Son!: When Jada has him at gunpoint to protect Ryan, Marquis claims she won't shoot her own son. Jada replies that he's not her son anymore.
  • Internal Reveal:
    • Alice learns that Marquis was on the bus the Joker hijacked.
    • Alice tells Marquis how to find the Batcave in exchange for the joy buzzer.
    • Mary and Luke learn that Ryan and Sophie are now "a thing".
  • Karmic Death: Marquis intends to kill the Black Glove Society using the same methods they used to correct the behavior of their children. Barbara Kean survives being severely poisoned, while Jada is spared because Marquis was expecting Ryan to show up.
  • Leave the Two Lovebirds Alone: After Mary has gotten over her initial squeeing about Ryan and Sophie's relationship, she practically drags Luke out of the room so the two can be "all cute and couple-y" together.
  • Let's Fight Like Gentlemen: Marquis goads Ryan into taking off her mask so he can use the freeze serum on her, after shooting her several times in the chest to stun her.
  • Logo Joke: The end card has a Joker smile painted onto the Batarang, now that Marquis has access to the Batcave.
  • Meet the In-Laws: There is some tension between Sophie and Jada. By the end of the episode, Sophie even plans to introduce Ryan to her own mom.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: At the end of the episode, when she is back in Arkham, Alice tearfully confesses to Mary that she told Marquis the location of the Batcave.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • Kiki Roulette mentions that she helped the Joker beat Robin to death with a crowbar.
    • Kiki also mentions that she used to work together with another "crazy blond woman".
    • James Gordon Jr. gets a mention, he is now in a vegetative state in Arkham.
  • Predecessor Villain: The Black Glove Society was founded by Marla Elliot.
  • Rage Against the Reflection: Alice, after waking up and realizing that she is still insane.
  • Taking the Heat: Despite initially reacting quite hostile when Mary accuses Alice of taking advantage of her and not doing anything to stop her from killing the hunter, Alice eventually takes the blame for the man's murder to protect her step-sister.
  • Villain: Exit, Stage Left: Marquis once more makes a run for it when the tables turn against him.
  • Villain Has a Point: Marquis makes some legitimate points during his rant against the Black Glove Society in how they're more concerned with protecting their own reputations than actually helping their kids, considering their questionable solutions and the lengths they went to keep their secrets.
  • We Can Rule Together: What Marquis offers to Alice.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: Burton Crowne, Jeremiah Arkham and Mario Falcone get no kind of characterization whatsoever before they are all unceremoniously killed by Marquis, and two of them off-screen at that.
  • You Wouldn't Shoot Me: When Jada aims a gun at Marquis to protect Ryan, Marquis insists she won't shoot her own son. She responds that he isn't her son, then shoots the canister out of his hand.
