Recap / Batwoman 2019 S 2 E 11 Arrive Alive

Go To

With Batwoman and the Crows each hot on the trail of the False Face Society, their efforts collide, and tension escalates. Alice seeks out Enigma, and Sophie and Ryan find some common ground.

Tropes:

  • Authority Equals Asskicking: Black Mask not only gets the drop on Sophie, he fights Ryan hand-to-hand and wins, requiring Sophie to step in to barely restrain him.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Ryan saves Sophie from Black Mask.
  • The Bus Came Back:
    • Ocean returns, on a mission from Safiyah to find the last sample of the Desert Rose, which he suspects Batwoman has since she's still alive.
    • Crows agent Tavaroff also returns for the first time since the Season 1 episode "Take Your Choice".
  • Crazy-Prepared: Black Mask has a livestream of Angelique being held at gunpoint by one of his goons as a getaway plan.
  • Drives Like Crazy: Ryan, apparently, due to Luke having to install an A.I. on the Batmobile to help her.
  • Drowning My Sorrows: Sophie, after Jacob pulls her off the False Face case.
  • Evil All Along: Alice desperately tries to claim being this, though nobody buys it.
  • Get Out!: Jacob yells this at Sophie when she presses his aggressive attitude towards the False Face Society.
  • Hollywood Acid: The incomplete Snakebite is this. Black Mask remarks that, if Angelique can't help him create his drug, he'll at least have something to dispose her body of with.
  • Hostage Situation: Black Mask threatens to have his mook kill Angelique if Batwoman and Sophie don't let him walk.
  • Idiot Ball: Sophie lets Jacob's harsh but pragmatically correct words get to her and goes into Black Mask's base on her own, getting herself captured and making the entire operation All for Nothing.
  • Internal Reveal:
    • Sophie learns Ryan is Batwoman.
    • Alice learns that Ocean is still alive and Ryan has the last sample of the Desert Rose.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Commander Kane pointing out that Angelique "picked her side" and isn't worth Sophie coming to harm over isn't the most compassionate thing he could possibly have said, but he's not wrong.
  • Kick the Dog: Alice needlessly kills one of Enigma's patients.
  • Mythology Gag: The False Face van has the livery of a florists called "Mr Bloom", with a picture of a yellow flower. In the comics Mr Bloom was the villain of the "Superheavy" arc in Batman, who wore a mask with a yellow flower on it.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero:
    • Batwoman attacks one of the couriers working for Black Mask, but it turns out to be Sophie undercover, ruining her operation.
    • Ryan leaves the Batmobile AI module in Mary's car, which Sophie finds. By analyzing it, she finds the audio logs of Luke's conversation with Ryan, revealing the latter is Batwoman and the former is in on it.
  • Oh, Crap!: Luke says those words when he sees the Crows chasing Ryan.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Sophie notices that something is seriously off with Jacob's behaviour (due to the drug use).
  • Pet the Dog: Enigma could have escaped easily while Alice and Ocean were distracted fighting each other, but she chooses to activate the trigger word which restores their memories of their love for each other.
  • Play-Along Prisoner: Enigma turns out to be this, as she has a Trigger Phrase to incapacitate Alice (and, in the event, Ocean) by restoring their lost memories, as well as a concealed blade in her cane that allows her to cut her bonds.
  • Revenge: Ocean is on a mission to retrieve the last Desert Rose, but he stops by Alice to confront her for stabbing him.
  • Revenge Before Reason: Sophie remarks that Russell Tavaroff, the new Crow in charge of hunting down False Face, would burn down the entire city just to get to them for killing his fellow agents.
  • Sequel Hook: The Crows take a sample of Batwoman's blood from the scene of her fight with Black Mask. Given she's in the system from a past incarceration, it won't be hard for them to get a match.
  • Tempting Fate: Ryan assures Luke that Sophie won't figure out she's Batwoman because she can barely see her as anything but a criminal out on parole. Sure enough, Sophie knows by the end of the episode.
  • Trigger Phrase: Enigma uses one to restore Ocean and Alice's memories of each other, giving her just enough time to make her exit as they're incapacitated by the memories flooding back.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic: Enigma insists Alice is capable of empathy and love, even as the corpse of the patient she murdered solely to clear a space in Enigma's schedule is in the couch next to her.
  • Visual Title Drop: This episode's title appears on a driving safety sign in the first scene.
  • Wounded Gazelle Gambit: Alice plays emotional in front of Ocean in order to get him to let his guard down and then attempts to stab him again.
