Recap / Arrested Development S1E17 "Altar Egos"

Go To

Michael has a deceitful one-night stand with Maggie (guest star Julia Louis-Dreyfus), a blind prosecutor who is arguing against his father. Gob gets married to a woman he has just met. Meanwhile, George Sr. uses an undercover FBI agent who has fallen for him for information on the case.

The Arrested Development episode "Altar Egos" provides examples of:

  • Casting Gag: Barry Zuckercorn goes to comb his hair in front of the mirror and stops upon seeing there's not a hair out of place, a signature move of another of Henry Winkler's characters.
  • Defecting for Love: Cindi confesses to George Sr. to have played The Mole for the government but is now switching sides because she loves him.
  • Fake Twin Gambit: Maeby pretends to be her ill sister.
  • Five-Second Foreshadowing: Pay attention to Maggie's face in the last segment of the "On the Next" bit. She is clearly following Tobias' path throughout the kitchen.
  • Foreshadowing: In the flashback to Michael in "The Trial of Captain Hook", he asks the judge to throw the book at Hook. Guess what he does in "Justice Is Blind" to prove Maggie isn't blind.
    • This might also be the earliest hint in the show to Buster's eventual fate.
    • The Maeby/George Michael relationship/incest story arc can fairly summarized as Maybe Bluth, Surely Fünke.
  • Not What It Looks Like: Lucille catches her husband feeling up Cindi's which prompts him to drop this line.
  • Obfuscating Disability: Maeby pretends to be a disabled girl called Surely to use the money she raises in donations, and to improve her grades.
  • Pun-Based Title: On "alter egos".
  • Trailers Always Spoil: The final part of the "on the next Arrested Development..." segment is a major spoiler for the next episode, "Justice Is Blind". Of course, this won't register for a first-time viewer given that the "next episode" segments are usually non-canon gags.
  • Wham Line: Speaking of:
Narrator: (as Tobias not-even-stealthily moves through Maggie's kitchen) Tobias is sent to break into Maggie's house to steal evidence. (cut to Maggie pulling out a bat as she exits the kitchen) Only to discover that she's not blind.
