Recap / Archies Weird Mysteries Reggie Or Not

Go To

Reggie's obnoxiousness, even when giving good advice about scams, repels everyone. Then he's kidnapped by aliens and asked to help with a robot double to replace him. When Reggie is asked about his personality, he gives a completely inaccurate rendition, leaving the robot with an eternally helpful nice guy attitude which makes Archie instantly suspicious. Can he prove that this Reggie is too good to be true?

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • Bait-and-Switch: As the two Reggies try to out-nice each other, one Reggie whispers something in the other's ear, causing the latter to get mad and punch the first one in the gut. The aliens take the aggressive Reggie while the remaining one is sent back to Earth...and reveals himself as the real Reggie. The real Reggie told his robo-double that if the robot was the real nice guy, he would throw the match.
  • "Be Quiet!" Nudge: When Reggie takes offense to being insulted while Archie is trying to come up with a plan to save everyone, Archie kicks him in the shin to make him temporarily quiet.
  • Diving Save: The Reggie-bot leaps to push Archie out of the way when he accidentally walks into the path of a truck. Archie is abashed and ready to admit he was wrong...until he sees exposed metal.
  • Face-Revealing Turn: After the Reggie-bot pushes Archie out of the way of a truck, he turns his face to reveal that half of the latex skin got ripped off, revealing the metal skeleton.
  • I Take Offense to That Last One: When the alien leader describes the real Reggie as an "obnoxious, self-centered, petty little creep", he only takes offense to being called "little."
  • I Want My Mommy!: Reggie is whimpering for his mother when the others arrive on the spaceship.
  • Nice Guy: The robot lookalike of Reggie. The climax features the robot and Reggie trying to out-nice each other and Reggie winning because he tells the robot that if he really was that nice, he'd let Reggie win.
  • Non Sequitur, *Thud*: When the aliens turn up the power on the mind-reading machine, Reggie first shakes his head, moaning, and then mutters that he doesn't like butterscotch cookies.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Reggie instantly turning into a nice guy is enough to make Archie suspicious.
  • Outhumbling Each Other: Reggie and a robot duplicate of him compete over which of them is nicer, a rather daunting task considering Reggie is a Jerkass while the robot is a Nice Guy. After several minutes of playing nice, Reggie eventually wins by telling the robot if it was really the nicest, it would let him win.
  • Properly Paranoid: Archie becomes very suspicious over how Reggie has turned a 180 and decides to prove that this Reggie is a robot. It takes three tries but he eventually figures out that he was correct.
Jughead: (upon seeing half of Reggie's face being robotic parts) Holy cosmic muffins! Archie was right!
  • Robotic Reveal: First, Archie uses a magnet on the Reggie-bot and it sticks to his chest, but it's because the robot has a cookie tray on him that he was going to give to Betty. Then, Archie tosses a bucket of water on him, but the robot senses it and bends over just in time, leaving Veronica soaking wet. Last, Archie is almost run over by a truck and the robot pushes him out of the way...but half of the robot's face got scraped off.
  • Rule of Three: While Archie had two tries in order to prove that Reggie was a robot, the third one was completely accidental.
  • Shout-Out: The sci-fi nerd the aliens have captive in the beginning drops references to Star Trek, Star Wars, The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951), Mork & Mindy and other works about aliens.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: The truck that nearly ran over Archie, prompting the Reggie-bot to push him out of the side and exposing his cybernetic parts underneath.
  • Spot the Imposter: Invoked by Archie. Initially, the alien commander wants to use a machine to see which Reggie has the metal skeleton, but Archie comments that a real man/alien wouldn't need machines. The alien falls for it. Reggie wins by playing nice and then suggesting to the robot that it would be nice to let him win.
  • Too Good to Be True: Reggie states this after Veronica was ripped off for a designer dress at a low cost (it's a doll-size dress with designer tags). This also turns out to be this episode's Aesop.
Reggie: Wake up and smell the rip off, Ronnie. If something sounds too good to be true, it is!
  • You're Just Jealous: The girls accuse Archie of claiming the nice Reggie is an imposter because he's jealous of the time they're spending with him. While Archie might be jealous, he's also right.
