Recap / Apple And Onion S 1 E 39 Election Day

Go To

Apple and Onion attempting to throw a street party is thwarted when they learn Mayor Naise banned street parties due to an apparent incident from 1978. However, they learn it was a lie so the mayor can have some peace and quiet, so Apple runs for mayor in the upcoming election.

  • Answer Cut: Mayor Naise tauntingly asks the duo if one of them is going to run against him in the upcoming election. Cut to Apple running for mayor, with Onion as his campaign manager.
  • Attack of the Political Ad: When Apple runs for mayor, Mayor Naise makes an ad that claims he and Onion are actually Jalapeño Pepper and Scotch Bonnet, "two of the biggest liars of all time!" Apple and Onion counter by tracking down the real Jalapeño Pepper and Scotch Bonnet and shooting a video of all four together. Mayor Naise then doctors a screenshot of the video and adds puppet strings to Jalapeño Pepper and Scotch Bonnet. So Apple and Onion are forced to sink to the mayor's level and make a CGI video of Mayor Naise robbing a bank. It works too well, getting the Mayor arrested.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Apple throws the election by confessing that he and Onion made up the ad showing Mayor Naise robbing a bank and apologizing for getting him arrested. Mayor Naise returns the favor by finally admitting to his lies and making street parties legal.
  • Clear My Name: After being painted as the liars Jalapeño Pepper and Scotch Bonnet by Mayor Naise's ad, Apple and Onion set out to prove they are different people by tracking down Jalapeño Pepper and Scotch Bonnet themselves and shooting a video showing all four of them together. Mayor Naise counteracts by making another ad depicting Jalapeño Pepper and Scotch Bonnet as puppets, deeming Apple and Onion as deceivers. And then Apple and Onion counteract by making a CGI ad depicting the mayor as a criminal who hates the city, getting him arrested, only to feel guilty about it and prove his innocence.
  • Consummate Liar:
    • Mayor Naise, which is the whole reason why the plot started.
    • Jalapeño Pepper and Scotch Bonnet, who are described as "two of the biggest liars of all time". However, this comes across as an Informed Attribute, as the two are never shown telling lies and even help Apple and Onion expose Mayor Naise's lie.
  • Dance Party Ending: The episode ends with the street party Apple and Onion have been trying to throw, after Mayor Naise legalizes them again
  • Didn't See That Coming: Apple and Onion are taken aback when their CGI ad causes the townspeople to turn on Mayor Naise and he gets arrested.
  • Didn't Think This Through: It didn't occur to Apple and Onion that depicting Mayor Naise as a bank robber in their CGI ad would get him arrested.
  • Gone Horribly Right: Apple and Onion try to beat Mayor Naise at his own game by making a political ad depicting a CGI version of him as a bank robber who hates the city and its citizens. This works too well, as not only the citizens side with Apple, but call for the mayor's arrest to which the police oblige.
  • Heel Realization: Apple and Onion have this when they get Mayor Naise arrested for a crime he didn't commit. Apple feels so guilty that he throws off the election party, saying that he's not "good and true" but "bad and false" for falsely accusing the mayor. This in turn causes Mayor Naise to realize his own wrongdoings and, once he's been exonerated, owe up to his lies.
  • Hypocrisy Nod: Apple and Onion resort to lying just like Mayor Naise due to feeling it's the only way to win the election. A guilty Apple later acknowledges their hypocrisy, saying it doesn't make him "good and true" as the public label him.
  • Landslide Election: Despite being exposed as a liar, Mayor Naise wins the election by a landslide due to the public feeling that his name sounds "mayor-like".
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Mayor Naise pays for being a selfish, dishonest, Sleazy Politician by being framed as a bank robber who hates the city by the duo and getting arrested for it.
  • Liar Revealed: Apple and Onion attempt to expose Mayor Naise's lies. The mayor counteracts by invoking this trope, making the duo seem like liars themselves. Ultimately, the duo stoop to his level and make their own lie, only to feel remorse over it and confess, which in turn prompts the mayor to confess his lies as well.
  • Mad Libs Catchphrase: Mayor Naise tends to say "__ chips!" when things don't go his way.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: The main duo when their political ad gets Mayor Naise falsely arrested.
  • Oh, Crap!: Mayor Naise upon watching the duo's CGI ad depicting him robbing a bank, and getting surrounded by the police.
  • Punny Name: Mayor Naise is a jar of mayonnaise who is the mayor of the city. In fact, this gets him reelected as the public felt his name fits the mayor role better than Apple.
  • Sleazy Politician: Mayor Naise. Making up a phony incident to make street parties legal just so he can have peace and quiet while blowing on his milk bottles and painting his competitors as liars and deceivers to keep them from exposing his lie, how can he not be this? That said, he does realize how unscrupulous he was at the end of the episode.
  • Slow Clap: Mayor Naise does this after the main pair realize that he had lied about the "street party incident of '78" just so he can blow on his milk bottles.
  • Stylistic Suck: The CGI ad made by Apple and Onion is full of low-polygon graphics and obvious mistakes. This still convinces the public.
  • Villains Want Mercy: Mayor Naise pleads for innocence when the citizens turn on him and the police arrest him when the main duo frame him as a bank robber.
  • Was It Really Worth It?: Apple and Onion certainly don't think so, when they finally get the townspeople to vote for Apple by getting the mayor falsely arrested with a CGI ad showing him robbing a bank.
