Recap / Animaniacs Episode 69

Go To

Airdate: November 12, 1994 (though I'm Mad was initially released theatrically with Thumbelina (1994) on March 30, 1994)

I'm Mad: In this musical short, Dr. Scratchansniff takes the Warners on a road trip, but Dot and Yakko keep arguing.

Bad Mood Bobby: Bobby wakes up on the wrong side of the bed, so Squit and Pesto attempt to cheer him up.

Katie Ka-Boom: The Blemish: Katie overreacts to a pimple.

Fake: The Warners attempt to convince Dr. Scratchansniff that professional wrestling is not real.

"I'm Mad" contains examples of:

  • Animation Bump: Since this was made as a theatrical short, there are a lot more shadings and the short is shown completely in letterbox.
  • Annoyingly Repetitive Child: Scratchandsniff is frustrated while driving the Warner siblings to the circus. While most of what's bugging him is Yakko and Dot's arguing, he's also annoyed by Wakko (who's eleven) complaining over and over that he's tired, hungry, squirmy, has a runny nose, and needs to use the "potty", and asking how far it is.
  • Are We There Yet?: Wakko's section:
Are we there yet? I'm tired.
    I'm hungry. How far?
    My nose is snotty,
    Need to move my body,
    Gotta use the potty,
    Better stop the car.
  • Chaotic Car Ride: This short features Dr. Scratchansniff trying to take the Warners to the circus in his car. Unfortunately, Yakko and Dot are at each other's throats while Wakko has a litany of complaints that combine to make Scratchy lose his mind.
  • Here We Go Again!: Despite having seem to have made up after their day at the circus, Yakko and Dot once again resume arguing when they are back in the car.
  • Road Trip Plot: Dr. Scratchansniff takes the Warners on a long car trip, only to struggle greatly because the Warners are fighting and arguing like bratty little kids the whole way. When they reach their destination, which turns out to be a circus, the Warners finally stop fighting and brighten up. We then skip to the end of the day, with the Warners and Dr. Scratchensniff returning to the car, and the Warners talk about how much they enjoyed their time at the circus. But then, the moment they start to drive away, the Warners start fighting again.
  • Sung Through: With the exception of the ending, all of the dialogue is sung or spoken in rhythm.

"Bad Mood Bobby" contains examples of:

  • The Cameo: Pesto and Squit make the big mistake of mocking Chuck Jones' Minah Bird from the Inki shorts. The Bird does his trademark Silly Walk to Mendelssohn's "Fingals Cave Overture" and beats up Bobby.

"Katie Ka-Boom: The Blemish" contains examples of:

  • Karma Houdini: Katie receives no comeuppance for destroying her parents' house with her violent outbursts.
  • Rise of Zitboy: Katie sees a zit on her forehead and her transformation makes her zit bigger.

"Fake" contains examples of:

  • Bad "Bad Acting": The "wrestlers" barely even touch each other, but Scratchy (and the rest of the audience) is oblivious to this.
  • Karma Houdini: The Warners receive no comeuppance for calling wrestling fake or ratting Dr. Scratchansniff out to the wrestlers when he tries to tell them otherwise, resulting in the latter getting beaten up.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: The Warners wear Groucho glasses because they are embarrassed that Scratchy loves this.
  • Pro Wrestling Is Real: Scratchandsniff believe this, and the wrestlers are determined to uphold kayfabe.
  • Real After All: When Scratchy inadvertently yells out "Fake!", the two wrestlers put him in the ring and beat him up for real. Which made the Warners realize wrestling is not fake after all.

Playing Catch with Grandfather

Played for laughs in a Good Idea, Bad Idea segment. The Bad Idea is playing catch using grandpa as the ball.

How well does it match the trope?
