    Full Recap

Tropes:

  • Aborted Arc: The ending of Bog taking over Toad Tower never comes up again. Bog, Mire, and Fens are only even shown again in the background near the series' end.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Toadstool gets to stay in Wartwood but the town is now under threats of toads who are more ruthless than Grime and his toads.
  • The Bus Came Back: The toad tax collectors (Bog, Mire, and Fens) and the rest of the Toad Army return in this episode since they were last seen in "Reunion".
  • Call-Back: The events of "Reunion" are brought up several times.
  • Chekhov's Gun: The chest of gold coppers Jacinda offers Toadstool ends up being used against Bog.
  • A Day in the Limelight: This episode is the first to focus solely on Mayor Toadstool.
  • Deus Exit Machina: Marcy and Frobo could have been a big help in the fight against the toads, but they are established early in the episode as being absent.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Apparently, Toadie thought that if Toadstool accepted the promotion, he'd get to go along. Upon learning that not only would he not accompany him to Toad Tower, but he would be replaced as an assistant by the new mayor of Wartwood, Toadie immediately jumped on board the side wanting Toadstool to stay.
    • And to make it more into what he felt at the moment, the mere thought of being separated caused his body to give in, causing him to pass out until the end of the episode.
  • Foreshadowing: Jacinda mentions that she and her guards had to dodge bandits while carrying the chest of gold to Wartwood. Turns out said bandits are the remnants of the Toad Army.
  • Gilligan Cut: Anne explains that Marcy is busy studying Frobo. Cut to an outhouse exploding with green light and Marcy shouting "Fascinating!"
  • Given Name Reveal: Mayor Toadstool's first name is revealed to be Frodrick.
  • Good Feels Good: Part of the reason Mayor Toadstool wants to stay in Wartwood is because helping the people there feels good.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business:
    • Toadie is shocked that the Mayor is willingly spending money on the town rather than on himself, though the Mayor tells him he has to take care of it himself.
Toadie: Who are you, and what have you done with my beautiful mayor?!
    • Toadie himself, who is such a pushover and never questions the mayor, complained directly and even ordered him around telling him he must take the promotion.
  • Original Position Fallacy: Toadie was really eager for Toadstool to get the new job at Toad Tower, even complaining directly on why he would choose not to do it. But then he was told that he will have a new assistant once he was in charge of Toad Tower and Toadie will not come along, something Toadie didn't seem to have considered, after that, he was happy that Toadstool had decided to stay.
  • Puppy-Dog Eyes: Mayor Toadstool resorts to this when begging Anne for help. She agrees, only if he promises to never make that face again.
  • Pyrrhic Victory: Even though the town stopped Bog and his army from ransacking Wartwood and Toadstool doesn't have to leave the town, Bog is now made the new head toad of Toad Tower and he tells Wartwood he'll make Grime look like a big softie in comparison. Everyone in Wartwood is left in shock after seeing this.
Anne: Well that went well. (Beat) Oh, who am I kidding, this is terrible!
  • Red Filter of Doom: Used briefly when Jacinda mentions that Mayor Toadstool would rot in a prison cell if he refuses her offer of being lord of Toad Tower.
  • The Remnant: The Toad Army became bandits after Season 1 and decide to ransack the town. But Jacinda decides to put Bog on Newtopia’s payroll.
  • Shout-Out: The dragon on Anne's "third option" looks suspiciously like Trogdor the Burninator.
  • Springtime for Hitler: Since he can't just turn down the assignment to Toad Tower, Mayor Toadstool tries to convince the Newtopian emissary that he's not cut out for the job, but his attempts to deliberately make himself look bad backfire. Ironically, his attempt to genuinely accept the role by renouncing the people of Wartwood and double-crossing and defeating Bog backfires as well—Jacinda sees through his lie, pieces together immediately that he's doing it to save the town, and concludes he's gone soft.
  • Stalker Shot: After Anne and Toadstool leave to get the Plantars to help them with their plan, two shadowy toads are spotted peeking out from the bushes spying on them. It's later revealed they're a part of Bog's army.
  • Status Quo Is God: Toadstool gets to stay as mayor of Wartwood, though on the other hand the greedy Bog is made the new master of Toad Tower, who promises to make Grime look civil by comparison.
  • Take a Third Option: Subverted. Anne provides the option of making Mayor Toadstool look cowardly or incompetent. When asked for a third option, she partially turns to a page with a dragon attacking Jacinda, then decides against whatever that would entail.
  • Written-In Absence: Marcy and Frobo are conspicuously absent from the Plantars planning with Toadstool to sabotage his promotion. When Polly asks why they're not involved, Anne states that Marcy is spending all day studying Frobo.
