Jaslyn (Gabourey Sidibe) buys an Aura smart cam to make her feel safer at home, but she and husband Bryce (Max Greenfield) are terrorized by a mysterious visitor whose appearances seem to be related to the camera.

  • Bad People Abuse Animals: Bryce callously poisons raccoons outside the house.
  • Cat Scare: Jaslyn is startled by what she thinks is an intruder outside, but is just raccoons in the trash.
  • Control Freak: Bryce is adamant that nothing, including his own death, detract from his "plan."
  • Deadly Prank: Bryce tries to "prove" that Hendricks isn't real by showing Jaslyn a video of a prank played on someone over Aura. She discovers it's actual footage of a convicted killer threatening his intended victim.
  • Dirty Old Man: Hendricks repeatedly made advances on teenage Jaslyn when she was in high school.
  • Electromagnetic Ghosts: This is how Aura picks up the presence of spirits.
  • Gaslighting: Bryce tries to convince Jaslyn that she's seeing things and overly-paranoid, even when he recognizes Mary Jeane.
  • If I Can't Have You…: Bryce's attitude toward Jaslyn after he's killed and returns via the Aura system.
  • Malevolent Masked Men: The intruder who killed Jaslyn's mother was disguised with a bunny mask, and Jaslyn still has nightmares about it.
  • Missing Mom: Jaslyn's mother was killed in a home invasion when her daughter was very young.
  • Oh, Crap!: Jaslyn when she learns her new apartment automatically has an Aura attached to it.
  • Protect This House: This is initially Jaslyn's motivation for buying Aura, and she later wants to defend her house from the ghosts too.
  • Read the Fine Print: Jaslyn doesn't, and misses the fact that the lease on her new apartment requires having Aura installed.
  • Til Murder Do Us Part: Bryce murdered his one-time fiancée and tries to kill his wife as well.
  • Unfinished Business: Hendricks' is his desire to atone for his inappropriate behavior toward Jaslyn. After she accepts his apology, his body is found the following day; suggesting that he's finally moved on.
  • Vengeful Ghost: Mary Jeane, who has no interest in forgiving Bryce for killing her. After she gets her own back, Bryce becomes a vengeful ghost as well.
