Recap / American Dad S 5 E 10 Family Affair

Go To

The family learns that Roger has more than one family, and has been lying about it for years.

Tropes:

  • Disney Owns This Trope: Lampshaded. The security guard notes that Roger was wearing several outfits of which he doubts he owns the rights to, including Belle and Pinocchio.
  • "Eureka!" Moment: The family gets Roger into group therapy so that he can work out his inability to stay with just one family. He starts to tell the doctor that he doesn't believe in therapy, only to instantly realize that the first family he lived with, the Logans, abandoned him years ago and he hasn't been able to trust anyone since then.
Doctor: You see that, people? That's how you share. That's a freakin' breakthrough! You make me sick!
  • Flipping the Table: Steve does this after they learn that Roger is cheating on them with another family.
  • Foil: The Logans for the Smiths. While Roger has lived in both homes for an extended period without paying, the Logans eventually decided enough was enough and abandoned Roger in order to get away from him.
  • I Have Many Names: Roger is known by different names by each of the families he's with, including Tony and Charles.
  • Insane Troll Logic: When the Logans call out Roger for refusing to pay rent, Roger defends himself by saying, "I payed you in laughter!"
  • Irony: The Smiths are distraught and in essence obsessed with the fact that Roger prefers to spend time with families other than them. The person they don't care as much about, Klaus, is going out of his way to do something nice for them by getting concert tickets yet they barely even care except to take Roger in his place.
  • Noodle Incident: The episode opens with Francine nonchalantly telling the family that she stabbed her college roommate and wondering how they didn't know that.
  • Seen It All: The theme park security guard doesn't seem to bat an eye at Roger appearing in different outfits with different families.
  • Self-Serving Memory: Roger claims that the Logans abandoned him for no reason whatsoever, but it turns out that they actually did so because he was an abusive freeloader who refused to pay rent.
  • Wrong-Name Outburst: Roger accidentally calls Steve "Scotty," which he attempts to cover by saying it's his new nickname due to Steve's love of Star Trek. It's actually the name of the boy in one of Roger's other families.
