Recap / All Hail King Julien S 03 E 13 Eye Of The Clover

Go To

Clover has been invited to the Tournament of the Doomed, an invite-only to the death tournament, and one of her great goals in life. Concerned for her safety, Julien tries to ban Clover from entering, but ultimately relents when he sees how important it is to her.

Tropes:

  • Bloodless Carnage: It is an extremely clean duel to the death as nobody actually wins their fight by killing their opponent, defeated opponents just get dropped into a pit instead.
  • Call-Back:
    • With Clover catatonic and forfeit meaning death, Julien decides to help out and claims to be Clover's twin, and explains that gravity caused their joined bellybuttons to drift down to joined legs, referencing his belief that all twins are joined at the belly button he expressed in "That's Sooo Rob"
    • Piney brings Clover to the same Afterlife Antechamber seen in "Pineapple Of My Eye" to talk to her grandma Rose.
  • Chained Heat: When Clover goes into a PTSD coma, Julien decides to join the tournament alongside her and tie their legs together posing as her "conjoined twin".
  • Deadly Game: The Tournament of the Doomed.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Julien can make the catatonic Clover throw a punch, but he didn't really think of a strategy beyond that.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Even though the whole tournament was a setup by Uncle Julien and she is allied with him, Crimson still secretly helps Clover out.
Crimson: You and I, you know, we have our problems. Um... but... She was my grandmother too. I wanted you to win.
  • Gory Discretion Shot: Grandma Rose died by being impaled on Wigman Wildebeest's horns, but the exact moment that happens is off-screen.
  • Heroic BSoD: Clover goes into a PTSD coma when she sees one of the opponents is Wigman Wildebeest, the man who killed her beloved grandma Rose in a back alley brawl.
  • Meaningful Background Event: When Masikura and Julien visit Clover's memory of her grandmother's death, Crimson can be seen present for the event, too.
  • Of Corpse He's Alive: When he notices comatose Clover can still throw punches by poking her, Julien tries to enter the tournament alongside her and control her like a puppet.
  • Pronouncing My Name for You:
    Wigman Wildebeest: That's "Vigman", the W sounds a V.
    Crocodile Ambassador: So, "Vigman Vildebeest"?
Wigman Wildebeest: Nein! "Vigman Wildebeest". (His thick accent makes it still sort of sound like "Vildebeest")
    Crocodile Ambassador: I'm so confused!
  • Ship Tease: Julien struggles with if he should let Clover participate or not. While he does want her to be happy, he also doesn't want her to die.
