Recap / Adventures Of Sonic The Hedgehog S 01 E 54 Robotnikland

Go To

The fifty-fourth episode of Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog.

On Sonic's birthday, Robotnik takes over a local amusement park called "Mobiusland" and changes the name to "Robotnikland". Then posing as the local mayor, he invites Sonic and Tails to the park, and locks them in with a variety of booby trapped rides. Finally, Sonic reprograms one of the rides to chase Robotnik, Scratch and Grounder.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Amusement Park of Doom: In this episode, Robotnik takes over Mobiusland, renaming it "Robotnikland" and reprogramming its rides to attack Sonic and his friends. Sonic takes control of the park near the end of the episode and reprograms the rides to chase Robotnik, Scratch, and Grounder.
  • Berserk Button: Grounder surprises Robotnik by giving him hotcakes for breakfast instead of eggs. Robotnik does not take this well, beating Scratch up and forcing Grounder to cook him the breakfast of eggs he wants, using him as the stove.
  • Birthday Episode: This episode takes place on Sonic's birthday.
  • The Cameo: The guests at Sonic's party include Harry the Hawker, Leo the Leopard, Miss Possum, Professor Caninestein, a Beach Bunny, and Cleaver Beaver.
  • Chekhov's Volcano: One shows up on the rollercoater Robotnik traps Sonic's friends on.
  • Closed Circle: Robotnik traps Sonic in Robotnikland, and to ensure Sonic can't escape from it, the exit door Sonic tries to break through is made of tempered steel, and the ground Sonic tries to dig through is made of reinforced concrete. Thus, Sonic has no choice but to stay in the park and try to enjoy the rides.
  • Clothing Damage: While in the giant pinball machine, a spinning blade slices off the front of Sonic's shoe, exposing his toes. Fortunately, Sonic is able to fix it mere seconds later.
Sonic: My little piggies almost went to the market... as ground meat!
  • Dynamite Candle: Robotnik traps Sonic and his friends in a giant mechanical birthday cake and uses 10-foot sticks of dynamite to finish them off.
  • Expressive Mask: Scratch disguises himself as a rat when he gives Sonic a free ticket to Mobiusland. The mouth of the costume's mask moves when Scratch talks.
  • Friendly Enemy: In this episode's "Sonic Says" segment, Scratch and Grounder cook breakfast for Robotnik, but accidentally set their chef hats on fire. Sonic, dressed as a firefighter, comes to Robotnik's fortress and puts out the fire, then tells Scratch, Grounder, and the viewers never to cook without supervision.
  • Heart Beats out of Chest: Perhaps a literal example; when Scratch narrowly avoids being chopped up by giant axes, he coughs out his still-beating mechanical heart, then puts it back in his mouth and swallows it.
  • Hellevator: While on the Sonic Ride, Robotnik, Scratch and Grounder run into an elevator that takes them to a Fire and Brimstone Hell.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: When Sonic and his friends escape from the giant mechanical birthday cake and chase after Robotnik, Scratch, and Grounder, the badniks try to escape, but Robotnik is locked in by the very exit door he locked to keep Sonic trapped inside Robotnikland. Sonic then takes control of Robotnikland, renaming it Sonicland and putting Robotnik through the same booby-trapped rides Robotnik put him through.
  • Human Cannonball: While on the reprogrammed roller coaster, Robotnik, Scratch and Grounder go into a giant cannon, which Sonic lights. The cannon shoots them into the giant pinball machine.
  • Jumping Out of a Cake: When trying to escape the park through the lower levels, Robotnik finds an open manhole and goes up. It turns out to be right under Sonic's birthday cake, resulting in the villains popping out through the frosting.
  • Mythology Gag: While on the Sonic Ride, some Buzzbombers shoot fire at Robotnik, Scratch, and Grounder.
  • Noodle Incident: At the beginning of this episode, Scratch suggests that Grounder surprise Robotnik with something other than eggs for breakfast. Grounder refuses, saying that the last time he surprised Robotnik, Robotnik demoted him to yacht anchor for a week.
  • Pinball Zone: At one point, Sonic partakes in a giant pinball machine controlled by Robotnik.
  • Shout-Out:
    • The inside of the Sonic Ride bears a resemblance to some other horror-themed dark rides, and all the surreal imagery seems reminiscent of Halloween Is Grinch Night.
    • The climax sequence, in which Robotnik and his robots attempt to escape from a horror attraction, seems to take clear inspiration from the Betty Boop cartoon "Bimbo's Initiation". Of specific mentions are scenes in which they open a series of doors leading to the last one swallowing them, Scratch sees the head of his shadow get chopped off, Scratch runs from giant swinging axes, and Scratch’s heart comes out from his throat, leading him to swallow it back down.
    • The Jungle ride bears a strong resemblance to the Jungle Cruise.
  • Snakes Are Sinister: Robotnik reprograms a robot snake on the jungle ride to trap Sonic in its coils and attempt to drown him. Sonic tricks Scratch and Grounder into saving him so he can trap them in its coils.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: This episode reveals that Robotnik has had eggs every day for breakfast for ten straight years. So when his badniks serve him hotcakes for once, he isn't happy.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: Scratch and Grounder try to surprise their boss by giving him hotcakes instead of his traditional eggs, hoping he'll like them. Robotnik thanks them by beating them up and making them get his eggs anyway.
