Root Beer Guy is convinced Finn and Jake have kidnapped Princess Bubblegum but has trouble getting anyone to believe him.

Tropes

  • Amazing Technicolor Population: Finn and Jake fight the red skinned ogre from "The Enchiridion".
  • And Now for Someone Completely Different: Non-video game example. Root Beer guy is an Ascended Extra and the focus of the episode, while Finn and Jake are the villains.
  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: Root Beer Guy tries to make the Banana Guards come to the lake by lying about how he's kidnapped Princess Bubblegum. They only arrive when he tells them he took a boat out after 8:00 pm.
  • Bowdlerise: The UK version cuts Cherry Cream Soda's more explicit references to her dissatisfaction with her husband's lack of sexual attention.
  • Dead Sparks: The state of Root Beer Guy's marriage until after the climax.
  • Desperately Looking for a Purpose in Life: Root Beer Guy is so unhappy with his life that it affects his marriage, the one thing he likes about it.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: Root Beer Guy goes though a lot, but in the end he has a new job as Captain of the Banana Guard where his talents are respected and his marriage is back on track.
  • French Maid: Root Beer Guy's wife, Cherry Cream Soda, dresses as one to try to seduce him.
  • Hero Antagonist: Finn and Jake are the antagonists this episode, but they have good reasons for doing what they do.
  • Mr. Exposition: Mr. Pudding, but you can call him Buck. He tells Root Beer Guy what Finn and Jake were buying from his store.
  • Noir Episode: Another one, strangely its not an established character, but rather a completely new one.
  • Only Sane Man: Root Beer Guy proves to a more competent officer of the law than the Banana Guards.
  • Our Giants Are Bigger: The aforementioned ogre.
  • Police Are Useless:
    • The Banana Guards don't even realize that Princess Bubblegum is missing. Root Beer Guy's competence in solving the case leads to him becoming Captain of the Banana Guard.
    • Not only that but her being missing was a test explicitly for them.... and instead they end up arresting Root Beer Guy.
  • Secret Test of Character: Bubblegum's kidnapping was staged to test the Banana Guard. Unsurprisingly, they fail horribly.
  • Shout-Out
    • The film posters in Root Beer Guy's house include This Gum For Hire and Fudge of Evil, which are references to the real films This Gun for Hire and Touch of Evil.
    • Two background characters in Root Beer Guy's workplace hint at a plot to acquire sales "leads" in a way that brings to mind Glengarry Glen Ross.
  • Soul-Crushing Desk Job: Root Beer Guy's day job is doing cold call phone sales, and it's obvious his heart's not in it.
  • Superdickery: Finn and Jake, who are acting incredibly shady and sinister. This turns out, naturally, to be an act.
  • Unusually Uninteresting Sight: Mr. Pudding shows complete indifference when Root Beer Guy drives off with his truck.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Cherry Cream Soda tips Finn and Jake off in a desperate attempt to get her husband back to normal. Naturally he doesn't take kindly to it.
